Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT FEBRUARY 3RD TO 9TH, 2006

BILLFISH: This week was the poorest we’ve had for billfish in quite awhile, but then again we have a huge moon, weather is cold and we are going through a transistion period. These conditions are not really unusual just a little earlier than normal. This week just seventeen percent of our boats were fortunate to bring marlin to the boat, however our overall catch success rate for all species combined was a very respectable eighty nine percent, which means smaller game took up the slack. Boats headed up to Golden Gate again this week in search of marlin, in basically a repeat of last week; most anglers didn’t want to spend hours and hours trying to get for marlin to bite, so the boats headed closer to shore to hook up with red snapper. We did have one decent marlin day which was February 8th when practically every boat we sent out caught and released at least one. Some did even better, such as “Rebecca” with three released at Golden Gate a for Jeff Owen , Kim Ferton and James Broome, all from Colodrado. “Ni Modo” also had three this day, at San Jaime, for Anthony Carrasco from Perris, Ca. “Tracy Ann” produced two for John and Tevor Oren. However overall it was pretty hard going for marlin. We did hear of a 500 lb blue caught last week and will follow with more details as we have them. All of the striped marlin were caught with live mackerel. Pisces anglers caught a total of 20 striped marlin this week of which all but one 160 lb fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES: Captain Steve Geary, aboard “Blue Thunder” brought home happy anglers on February 4th after landing them a huge 204 lb yellowfin tuna. Steve had found the school of porpoise at Golden Gate early in the day, along with 50 over boats. Fish in the 100 lb size range were seen jumping but could not be enticed with anything. Steve decided to lose the traffic and head else where as the tuna were obviously spooked, but returned later in the day when nobody else was around. On his second sweep through the school with a trolled cedar plus they got lucky, hooking up the fish, which took one and forty minutes to bring to the gaff on 80 lb test (photo will be on our website tomorrow). This was the best tuna catch of the week, as our boats only caught four other fish int eh 30 to 40 lb class. Dorado catches showed some improvement with twenty percent of charters hooking fish in the 15 to 30 lb class; catches were usually of a single fish though some boats did get as many as five. Red snapper or pargo was the most widely caught fish with thirty six percent of charters catching at Los Arcos, some boats with up to ten in a day. Mostly caught on bait, with weighs from 15 to 45 lbs. Inshore there were plenty of sierra, some amberjack and needlefish. Some boats also landed large squid.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, some windy days on the Pacific which lead to bumpy seas on a couple of days.

LOCATION:Golden Gate, San Jaime, Los Arcos.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69 – 70 F

BEST LURES: live bait.
