Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT APRIL 7TH TO 13TH 2006

BILLFISH: We have been pleasantly surprised by how good the fishing is. Usually at Easter time, we expect the fish to take off on vacation, just like everybody else. That is you see them, but they are not hungry. That has not been the case this week……we ended up with seventy nine percent of charters catching striped marlin and an overall catch success rate of eighty six percent for all species combined. The week started out a little slower with most boats getting a single marlin, or occasionally getting “skunked”, but as the week progressed, we starting seeing catches of three and four marlin a boat, despite full moon and clear night skies. On April 7th, “Ni Modo” caught seven striped marlin and a dorado for the Langhorne family from Santa Barbara, California at the 95 spot. On the 9th, 28 ft “Andrea” released four stripers and boated two yellowfin tuna for Martin and Jack Hewlett from Gardnerville, Nevada, 20 miles straight out from Land’s End. Next day out “Ni Modo” scored again, this time with five marlin released for Mel and Barlo Ayers from Clinton, Ohio, off of Land’s End. This same day “Andrea” had four marlin, three released, one at 140 lbs, plus a dorado for Keith Miller from Lewisville, Texas and Bryan Davis from Porterville, California. At the end of the week, we had a couple of ten year olds release their first marlin each aboard “Ruthless”; Casey Fiebig and Jacob Leninger from Castro Valley, Ca, fished with their fathers Tim and Mark, who also managed to release a fish each, bringing their tally for the day to four fish. There is some size to the stripers right now with some fish up slightly over 200 lbs. Almost without exception, the marlin were caught on live bait. Pisces anglers caught a total of 140 striped marlin this week, with 130 released.

OTHER SPEICES: For the first time in awhile we had a flurry of wahoo activity, that is to say they are not abundant, but the odds were better for these than tuna. “Valerie” had two at 30 and 70 lbs respectively on April 12th for Joey Heller from, California, who also boated two dorado and released a striped marlin. “Tracy Ann” had a nice 80 lb wahoo plus a 35 lb dorado for Jeff Satterland from Enum Claw, Wa. Dorado catches were up a little this week with sixteen percent of boats catching fish in the 20 to 40 lb range usually one or two fish, taken whilst trolling. Yellowfin tuna catches were low at thirteen percent, of school size tuna. The one exception was a 130 lb fish aboard “Valerie”, caught by Phillip Summerest 20 miles straight out from Land’s End. Inshore there have been sierra, some roosters and ladyfish.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas mostly calm.

LOCATION: Land’s End three to twenty three miles offshore, up the Cortez as far as the 11.50 spot.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 71 F

BEST LURES: Live bait.
