Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
APRIL 14th to 20th, 2006
BILLFISH: This week we again saw very good and consistent catches of striped marlin, with eighty four percent of charters catching between one and six striped marlin. Most of the fishing was concentrated off of Land’s End between three and twenty-three miles offshore with live bait the best bet for hooking up to a billfish. The striped marlin are of a good size between 120 and 190 lbs. Twenty eight foot “Andrea” had the most marlin in a single day, with six on April 19th for Kenneth Meinke, Dan Koch, Sahawan Kwaus and Steve Arnold all form different states in the U.S. This same day “Rebecca” released four for Becky Bingman and John Breeden form Kentucky in the same area. This was just one of four quadruple marlin days for Rebecca this week. “Karina” had four just four miles out from Santa Maria on the 16th for Mike Steppe from Missoula and Craig Schelling from Liberty, Utah. “La Brisa” fished a totally different location on the 18th and was able to release four marlin and boat two yellowfin at the Jaime Bank. Those that did not catch fish were just plain unlucky, it wasn’t anything that the crews weren’t doing. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was eighty eight percent. Pisces anglers caught a total of 133 striped marlin this week of which 120 were released.
OTHER SPECIES: We were pleased to catch some wahoo again this week; with several fish from 40 to 70 lbs. Dorado catches were at eighteen percent, with catches from 15 to 40 lbs and seldom more than one fish. Tuna catches were even slower with just ten percent of charters finding an odd yellowfin here and there. “Sundancer” lucked out one day, being able to boat twenty school size fish, as well as a dorado and a marlin released, thirty-five miles off of Los Arcos on April 14th. Some sharks were spotted, such as a 400 lb hammerhead that did not want to bite and Valerie caught a smallish Mako at 60 lbs. Inshore action is starting to pick up for sierra, yellowtail and rooster fish.
LOCATION: 95 spot to San Jaime, best spot straight out from Land’s End.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Sunny, clear skies, breezy in the afternoons with whitecaps on the Pacific. Much calmer on the Cortez side.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 70 f
BEST LURES: live bait
