Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT MAY 12TH TO 18TH, 2006

BILLFISH: This week saw another fishing tournament, the World Championship Billfish Release Tournament, is a newcomer but they have their hearts in the right place. Unfortunately the tournament did not receive enough promotion and didn’t get much exposure, but with a million dollar prize for most fish released, this event is sure to attract a lot of attention next year. A total of 29 boats entered with the top boat “Bad Company” winning, with over 30 fish released over three days. We have not yet received a formal press release but the first place result is accurate. In other news we again saw good fishing in Los Cabos with an overall catch success rate of eighty-seven percent for non-tournament boats. Of these charters seventy-three percent caught marlin. The boats fished the areas of Destiladeras which is a the day charter limit up into the Sea of Cortez, the Gordo Banks, as well as areas closer to Cabo such as the 11.50 spot and Red Hill. Not all boats met with success, but all saw marlin and at lest threw bait to them. We had three boats with quadruple marlin days that are worthy of mention: first up was “Adriana” for Lance and Kate Clawson from Austin Texas, on May 12th at Destiladeras, next was “La Brisa” on the 13th for Alan Rockey and Jose Williams from California fishing with Michael Levin from Virginia; last but not least was “Rebecca” for Nancy and Brent Bristow from Georgia. Pisces anglers caught a total of sixty striped marlin this week of which all but one 160 lb fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES: It was slow for other game fish this week, in fact only ten percent of the boats got tuna and dorado. The tuna catches were usually a single fish from 10 to 25 lbs. The only exception was “Valerie” that caught seven plus three dorado, just half a mile off of San Jose. Dorado catches were between two and four fish with weights up to 30 lbs. Several wahoo were caught, but of smaller size 30 to 40 lbs. Inshore it was mostly sierra, skipjack and some jacks.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas moderate, rough on the Pacific with a lot of wind.

LOCATION: Destilderas, Punta Gorda, Redhill, 11.50 spot.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 74

BEST LURES: Live bait.
