Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

JULY 14TH TO 20TH 2006

BILLFISH: More of an average week this period rather than great fishing, resulting in an overall catch success rate for all species combined of seventy nine percent. What we need to see is fishing turn more consistent. Right now it can be good one day with everybody averaging a marlin plus a dorado or tuna, the next day half the boats can draw a blank. This is frustrating for anglers who do well one day and then do exactly the same thing the next day but with poor results. Nevertheless it is more good than bad and fifty six percent of our anglers did manage to catch one or more billfish. Randy Cohen and family from Houston, Texas enjoyed three great days aboard “Yahoo”. They were fortunate to catch one blue marlin, lose another really big blue after a multi hour tug of war and boat three yellowfin tuna and a huge dorado estimated at 75 lbs. Mark Sydow from San Francisco, fishing with family, was thrilled to release a blue marlin, two striped marlin and a yellowfin tuna just off of Santa Maria on the 18th of July, aboard “Valerie” – congratulations on this group effort. Another family that did really well was the Bradberrry’s from Creek Spring, Texas, Chris and Anthony though both under eight year’s old, helped dad Michael reel in two striped marlin and a sailfish twelve miles off of Chileno, aboard “Rebecca” on the 19th. William and Susan Bozeman from Mansfield, Georgia were well pleased with two sailfish released and a 36 lb dorado, taken aboard “Andrea”. Practically everything was on the Cortez side all week, with the exception of one day at San Jaime on the Pacific. It was a shame to see so many small striped marlin coming back to the dock in the 80 to100 lb range. Pisces anglers caught a total of 32 striped marlin, 7 blue marlin and 6 sailfish – 44 fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES: After marlin dorado was the fish most likely to be caught. However, these were single fish generally picked up whilst trolling for marlin . Weights were from 20 to 36 lbs, with the one exception the large fish caught aboard “Yahoo” (see picture below)- twenty percent of charters found dorado.

Tuna catches were a little slower when averaged by boat, with just eleven percent catching fish in the 20 to 70 lb class. However, when tuna were found boats could catch up to ten fish. Inshore slow with many pangas getting “skunked”.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot and hazy, seas mostly calm.

LOCATION: Cortez side – Punta Ballena, Chileno and Destialderes.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 85 F

BEST LURES: live bait, green/yellow, guacamaya, red/black.
