PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
September 15th to 21st, 2006
BILLFISH: Fishing was good this week with plenty of action, resulting in a ninety one percent overall catch success rate for all species combined. Marlin catches could have been a bit better, nevertheless fifty one percent of charters caught billfish, with striped marlin being the most abundant and then almost even amounts of sailfish and blue marlin. It was nice to see some size developing on the blue marlin front….. “Tracy Ann” landed a 400 lb fish at Destiladeres on September 19th for Patrick Neville, the fish took a guacamaya lure. A 350 lb blue was taken aboard “C Rod” on the 18th at Destiladeres on a lure - this boat also landed a half dozen yellowfin tuna. This same day “Rebecca” had an enviable day, with a blue marlin close to 300 lbs, a sailfish and two dorado for Joe Kovack from Fort Collins, Co. Fishing locations changed quite a bit, one day boats headed to the Cortez and mainly to Destiladeres, whilst the next day they would fish the area off of the old lighthouse. For instance, “Valerie” fished Destiladeres on September 20th and released three striped marlin on live bait for Clayton Allen from Richmond, Va. Next day out James Gleason from New Jersey, fished this same boat, off of the Lighthouse and managed to release a striped marlin and sailfish, as well as boating three yellowfin tuna and three dorado. Pisces anglers caught 34 billfish, consisting of twenty striped marlin all released, six blue marlin, two released and eight sailfish all released.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado continued as the number one sportfish this week with sixty percent of boats catching between one and eleven fish between 18 and 30 lbs. One exception was John Ledger, from England, who caught two huge dorado, one at 50 lbs and the other close to 60 lbs. Most of the dorado were caught on the Pacific side from the lighthouse as far up as Golden Gate. Tuna catches were decent at a thirty percent catch rate. Catches were from one to ten fish per boat, with weights from 15 to 45 lbs. Although they were found both on the Cortez and Pacific the better location was from San Jose to Destiladeres, with sardines functioning well. A nice 60 lb wahoo was caught aboard “Ruthless” twelve miles off of San Jose, one of only two caught by Pisces this week.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: The weather has made a change and mornings on the Pacific feel distinctively cooler, followed by blazing hot days still, but evenings are also breezier. Skies clear, seas calm, though there are whitecaps in the late afternoon on the Pacific.
LOCATION: Destiladeres, Old Lighthouse, Morros Prietos, 11.50 spot, 95 spot, San Jaime.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 83 F
BEST LURES: Live mackerel, sardines, assorted lures.
