Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT NOVEMBER 10TH TO 16TH, 2006

Overall catch success rate for all species combined 87%

BILLFISH: This week saw great fishing in Cabo, with just a few boats getting “skunked” and the rest having a good mix of striped marlin, which was the most numerous of the billfish, sailfish and even an odd black marlin. All the fishing was on the Pacific from the Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate, plus a few boats venturing even further. Both lures and live bait worked, with live bait having a slight edge. On November 10th “Libre” had a sailfish day, releasing a very respectable five fish at the Golden Gate for Rick Christopher from Los Altos Hill, Mark Baker from Danville, Ca fishing with Cabo buddy Victor Hernandez. Next day out this same boat did well with one striper and 18 dorado (half were released). “Cabolero” had a nice black marlin on the 13th for David McCarthy from Lucas, Texas, estimated at 250 lbs; this one was closer to Cabo off of Land’s End. Glen Schlager and Jeff Craig, both from Massachusetts were thrilled to release four striped marlin aboard “Adriana” also at the Golden Gate. “Ni Modo” gave Jeff Smith from Calgary, a busy day with four marlin released and 15 dorado between friends on the 14th. To round out the week it was “Libre’ again this time with five striped marlin for Brian Walsh and Robert Arnold from Massachusetts’s. Our marlin catch success rate this week was fifty-five percent making it the most numerous sport fish in local waters; our anglers caught a total of 88 of which 82 were released.

OTHER SPEICES: A monster grouper was caught by a commercial sardine boat in San Carlos this week, the huge fish was 712 lbs, known locally as a bay grouper, due to it’s light color, it was hard to identify the fish accurately from the photo we received as the tail was not shown. After marlin, dorado was the most numerous fish in Cabo, with fifty percent of boat landing between one and eighteen fish; they were found over a wide area on the Pacific and took both bait and lures like the marlin. Our total dorado count was 202 fish. Tuna catches were on the slow side with just twelve percent of charters finding fish in the football class of 15 to 25 lbs. Several boats caught grouper to 50 lbs. Inshore there were skipjacks and still some roosters, smaller dorado and the odd marlin.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Can’t be beat, clear sunny skies, calm seas.

LOCATION: Land’s End to Golden Gate.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 80 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, green/yellow, red/black.
