Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT NOVEMBER 24TH TO 30TH, 2006

OVERALL CATCH SUCCESS RATE FOR ALL SPECIES COMBINED 92%

BILLFISH: Another really excellent week in Cabo, with plenty of striped marlin around. Last week we bottom fished for them at the Golden Gate, by weighting the line with a lead sinker, this week it changed somewhat with fish moving closer to the surface, with the preferred method being drifting with live bait. Striped marlin was by far the most abundant sportfish in our area with seventy-eight percent of charters hooking up to between one and eight in a day. Our total tally for this period was 152 striped marlin, between 120 and 180 lbs, of which only one was kept, the rest were released and four sailfish all released. To get a mention this week you had to catch four or more marlin in a day, which is great fishing by anyone’s standards. We had two groups on “Ni Modo” that could be considered anglers of the week: on November 27th Diane and Paul Manning from Dandridge, Va released a total of eight marlin and boated one dorado. The next day out Jerry Crowe Sr. from Redondo Beach, Ca, fished with Matthew Miller, from Missouri and caught and released seven striped marlin and a sailfish, as well as landing two dorado; an outstanding day. “Valerie” released six marlin on the 30th for Andrew and David Swartout, fishing with Derek Paulin, all from cold Minnesota. “Rebecca” had J.P Lapeyre from San Diego aboard along with Nick Galler and JD Clapan from El Cajon, on November 26th, when they were fortunate to release five stripers plus a sailfish. Other boats averaged one to four fish each, plus the odd dorado here and there.

OTHER SPECIES: After marlin, dorado were the next most common sportfish, however we did see quite a sharp decline in their numbers overall with a total of 60 fish caught this week, less than half of what was caught last week. Thirty-eight percent of boats found between one and five fish in the 15 to 25 lb class. Yellow fin tuna catches were slow with just the percent of charters finding football size fish. “C Rod” headed out 35 miles from Land’s End and managed to boat twelve for John Schladen on November 25th. We had a few wahoo this week, “Tracy Ann” had two smaller ones, up to 25 lbs, as well as a tuna and two marlin released for Bill Connor and Susan Giorno from Conneticut and New York, respectively. “Reel Heaven” had a nice one that hit 60 lbs, as well as four dorado and one marlin, for Brian McEnroe and William Lucas, both from Arizona. Inshore pangas caught roosterfish, sierra and skipjacks.

LOCATION: Pacific, Land’s End to Golden Gate, though Golden Gate was definitely the hot spot.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy this week, seas were on the choppy side at the start of the week and are mostly calm, as long as the wind stays down. For the first time we feel like summer is over and there is an early morning chill in the air.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 77 F

BEST LURES: Live bait.
