Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT DECEMBER 21ST TO 28TH, 2006

BILLFISH: I can’t remember when we have had a better Christmas week, absolutely every boat out caught fish this week, except for a few people that got seasick and turned around. Our grand total on striped marlin was a fabulous 198 fish, of which 195 were released, along with one sailfish. “Yahoo” was one of our top boats with eight marlin released on the 21st for the Hendel family from Beverly Hills, Ca. who also boated four dorado. “Ni Modo” also had eight fish for Robert Karpp and Alex Sivo from Massachusetts. Other boats such as “Rebecca” consistently had 3 to 5 marlin per day, whilst others had one to six during their trip. All of the action was at Golden Gate and live bait the key to getting hook-ups. Fishing could have been even better if not for some very windy weather towards the end of the week, causing some boats to turn back early and some anglers to get queasy. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was 95% our catch success rate for marlin was 94% an enviable ratio by anybody’s standards.

OTHER SPECIES: After striped marlin, dorado were the most widely caught species, with 38% of charters catching fish in the 15 to 35 lb class. Catches were between one and seven fish most being found mixed in with the marlin at Golden Gate. Tuna catches were extremely slow; in fact most boats didn’t even bother trying for them. One charter did head out 22 miles from Land’s End but only turned up a solitary 30 lb specimen. We did have a couple of wahoo at 40 and 70 lbs and inshore there were skipjacks and roosterfish.

LOCATION: Golden Gate

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Starting clear and then turning cloudy towards the end of this report, on the28th we had a little light rain, which is perfectly normal, it always rains lightly on or around New Year’s Day. Seas were on the rough side due to the strong winds that blew all night.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 75 F

BEST LURES: Live bait.
