Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT JANUARY 5TH TO 11TH, 2006

BILLFISH: What can I say, another superb week here in Cabo, though we were a little surprised at the variety of fish being caught. Usually we expect pretty much just striped marlin in January, but we are seeing quite a few sailfish, a lot of dorado and even giant squid who generally make an appearance in March. Catches were very good this week; in fact we had an almost perfect catch record. Just one boat did not catch fish, giving us an overall catch success rate for all species combined of ninety-nine percent. Striped marlin catches remain consistent with eighty-eight percent of boats catching between one and six per day, with three fish being the average. Golden Gate is still holding them; there must be a lot for them to eat at this bank. Notable catches were six marlin aboard “Tracy Ann’ on January 11th for Judy and Michael Tormey from Geeley, Colorado, six marlin for “Rebecca” one day before for Michael and Cindy Hulquist from Alaska and six marlin also for “Andrea” plus three dorado for Keon Dagler from Sherwood, Oregon and Aaron Gore from Hillsburo, Oregon. Some of our larger vessels also did well, such as “El Gallo” with a half dozen fish for Ron Clapper from Montoursville, Pa. “Josephine” is usually considered more of a luxury yacht for cruising, but this week she strutted her stuff, catching and releasing three striped marlin and a sailfish, plus four dorado to boot on January 7th. Pisces anglers caught a total of 127 striped marlin and four sailfish, all released. OTHER SPECIES: Lots of dorado this week, most found mixed in with the marlin at Golden Gate. Our anglers caught seventy-four fish; most of average size at 15 to 30 lbs. Catches ranged from one to eight fish. Top dorado boat was “C Rod” on the 11th - they also released three striped marlin this day. Tuna catches were very slow this week. We did release one small hammerhead and one mako shark at the Golden Gate also. There were several large squid, up to 30 lbs found here too as well as one small wahoo. Inshore boats caught sierra and a few roosterfish.

LOCATION: Golden Gate, Old Lighthouse.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy, cool evenings, seas calm.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 72 F

BEST LURES: Live bait.
