Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 3rd to 8th, 2007 Pisces Weekly Report
OVERALL CATCH SUCCESS RATE 81%
BILLFISH: This week was a bit tough in respect that the location changed and boats took a couple of days to figure out where to fish. Although Golden Gate was still one of the top locations, there were days when it simply did not produce marlin, forcing boats to look on the Cortez side mostly at the 95 spot ad the 11.50 spot – with a drop in water temperature also being a factor. This is not to say that fishing was not good, most days it was, with the only really poor day being February 6th, when just one marlin was caught by our fleet, with more dorado, tuna and a few sharks caught this day. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was a very decent eighty-one percent, whilst the billfish rate was seventy one percent. One of the better days was February 7th, when “Tracy Ann” released six striped marlin at the 95 spot for Scott Carlson, Jeff Folsita, Steve Madden and Jason Baier all from Minnesota; they also boated a dorado. This same days “C Rod” had five releases for a group from Montana and “Falcon” released four for a group from Georgia all in this same area. Quite unusual are the number of sailfish right now, though they are not abundant we are nevertheless seeing more than usual for this time of year. “Valerie” released two plus one striped marlin for Robert Mercier from Punta Gorda, Florida. On the 5th “Ni Modo” released five marlin for Alan Pasternack from Villanova, Pa fishing with friends Kim Kimmel and Jarrett and Jackie Wells. We had several boats with quadruple marlin days too such as “Andrea” on the 8th for Corrine Shelton, from St Louis, Mo and Mark Miller from Reno, aboard “Valerie” on the 3rd of February, as well as Chuck Fomasi from Santa Rosa, Ca aboard “Ni Modo” also on the 3rd. Pisces anglers caught a total of 81 striped marlin and 9 sailfish, all but one striped marlin were released.
OTHER SPECIES: We saw a drop on dorado this week, down to a sixteen percent catch rate, with just 8 boats catching one fish each and then not huge fish at 15 to 20 lbs each. These fish were all picked up whilst trolling for marlin. Tuna catches were even slower with three boats only finding fish between 20 and 60 lbs. “Falcon” found tuna 28 miles to the south of Cabo and managed to land a half dozen between 20 and 60 lbs for Matt and Julie Prines from California. A few hammerhead and mako sharks were released at Golden Gate, none bigger than 60 lbs. Inshore the sierra have started going off with huge amounts caught by pangas, were you could easily release 30 plus fish in a morning.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: We are back to our normal beautiful weather, clear sunny skies, a nice breeze and seas mostly calm.
LOCATION: Golden Gate, 95 spot, 11.50 spot, San Jose 11 to 13 miles out.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
