PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
FEBRUARY 16th to 22nd, 2007
BILLFISH: Fishing in Cabo is right about like it should be for this time of year, where a transition is starting to take place from winter to spring. We did see a bit of a slow down on marlin this week, nevertheless, fifty eight percent of charters caught an average of one or two striped marlin each. Some days were excellent this week, whilst others could only be described as so so. Boats fished in diverse locations and there wasn’t one exact spot where you could go and be guaranteed a billfish catch. Most boats went to the Sea of Cortez to the 11.50 spot and 95 spot, however, fishing would be good one day, then slow the next, so boats would go up to San Jose and surrounding areas, however, after a day or two it would be good again at the 95 and 11.50. Some days it was the Pacific that produced the most. Basically what we are saying is that the fishing is really spread out and not consistent at any one location. The fish are there it’s a question of guessing of where they are on any given day. Some exceptional catches were “Falcon” with four marlin released for Noel Maltman, from Cabo on February 16th – two took lures, two took live bait, at the 11.50 spot. Next day out “Ni Modo” released three stripers and a sailfish 6 miles off of Palmilla for the Clark family for Ashland, Kentucky. “C Rod” had the most active day of the week, on February 22nd when they caught a big striper, estimated at 160 lbs and then caught 14 tunas and 8 sierra for Leonard Bellavia and party from Long Island, New York. This boat fished the Pacific getting the marlin at Los Arcos, the tuna at San Jaime and the sierra inshore, now that’s a captain that worked! Pisces anglers caught a total of 58 striped marlin this week and 3 sailfish, all but one marlin were released.
OTHER SPECIES: Not that great on smaller game, however, it shouldn’t be too long before we start seeing some schools of yellow fin tuna move into the area. This week just eight percent of boats found tuna with catches usually of no more than five fish of school size, 15 to 25 lbs. Dorado catches were a little better at thirteen percent; all were fished picked up whilst trolling for marlin and catches were rarely more than one fish. Inshore sierra were good on most days and were fun on light tackle, as well as being delicious to eat. There were a few skipjacks and squid to 40 lbs also.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Beautiful, sunny, clear, seas mostly calm.
LOCATION: 95, 11.50 spots, San Jose, Punta Gorda, Palmilla, San Jaime,
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 70-71 F
BEST LURES: Live bait and lures combined.
