Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT March 23rd to 29th, 2007

BILLFISH: Wow, we were quite surprised at how good fishing was this week. Ninety percent of boats caught fish, with seventy seven percent catching marlin. When we say marlin we are not talking a fish per boat, we had some vessels release up to six in a day. The start of this period gave us our best days, “ Falcon” released a half dozen marlin on March 23rd at San Jaime, contrary to all the other boats who went in the opposite direction, for Alan and Alexander Noot from Long Lake, Minnesota. This same day “Yahoo” at the opposite end of our fishing grounds also released six for Richard Kutson and friends from San Antonio, Texas at Destiladeres. Following this boats commonly caught between two and four striped marlin each, usually all on the Cortez side at Punta Gorda – both “Rebecca” and “Yahoo” had quadruple marlin days for groups from Oregon and New Jersey, respectively. Later in the week “Tracy Ann” went up the Pacific and fought four stripers between 110 and 150 lbs at the Jaime Bank for Jose Escobedo, Vicente Carpino and Jeff Brooks all from Southern California. As the week progressed the moon began to get bigger and we saw a bit of a slowdown, nevertheless the marlin bite remained consistent. Pisces anglers caught a total of ninety five striped marlin this week; all were released.

OTHER SPECIES: It was feast or famine this week, either marlin or close into shore sierra and other small species. It was very slow for both dorado and tuna. Ten percent of boats caught dorado, usually just the odd incidental fish picked up whilst trolling. Only one boat caught tuna; “Andrea” managed to land eight in the 18 to 22 lb class, 38 miles out just past San Jose. Inshore, as is common for March boats loaded up on sierra, or Spanish mackerel, this extremely tasty fish, is fun on light tackle. One panga caught 42 in a morning, the majority were put back and a few kept for the pan. A couple of small mako sharks were released. Some assorted fish were also caught such as yellowtail, jack crevalle bonita and pompano. As we move into April we expect big schools of small tuna to move into the area.

LOCATION: Mostly Sea of Cortez, Destiladeres, Punta Gorda, Palmilla, Cerro Colorado and San Jaime on the Pacific.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, windy up beyond San Jose.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 70 F

BEST LURES: Live bait.
