Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
MAY 25th to 31st, 2007
BILLFISH: Quite an improvement this week on fishing overall, but especially on billfish, with striped marlin the most widely caught species in Cabo this period. The wind finally died down and it became blisteringly hot throughout the week. Though catches improved, resulting in an overall catch success rate of seventy one percent for all species combined (up a little over 20% from last week) and forty five percent catch rate for marlin, fishing was still not what we consider excellent for Cabo. There were days when seventy percent of the boats would do great whilst the rest got skunked. The better fishing was towards the end of the week when several boats had multiple marlin days. On May 31st “Sundancer” released five striped marlin for David Solomon off of the hotel Westin on the Cortez side. This same day “Falcon” released four striped marlin and one sailfish for Mark Sydow and Elaine Ebacher from San Francisco further out at Destiladeres. “Andrea” also did well this day with four releases for Kenneth Gregory from Montgomery Illnois. All the marlin fishing was on the Cortez side some closer at the 95 and 11.50 spots and some as far away as Destiladeres. Everything was on live bait. Pisces anglers caught a total of 58 striped marlin and on sailfish all but three fish were released. Weights on striped marlin ranged from 80 to 160 lbs.
OTHER SPECIES: We got excited for one day as we thought the missing tuna had shown up on May 27th, but it was not to be. Good catches were had by pretty much all boat this day, but the next day they were gone again and only those boats that realized early on in the day that the tuna bite was on, straight out from Land’s End, met with success, as the rest of the boats took off for Destiladeres looking for marlin. Top tuna boats were “Rebecca” with 14 tuna for Gerald Richmond from Oceanside, California and “Reel Heaven” with twenty fish for Jean Harris and party from Houston, Texas. Weight on the tuna ranged from 10 to 25 lbs. Twenty three percent of boats caught yellow fin tuna. Doardo catches were quite a bit slower with just twelve percent of b oats finding fish from to 10 to 25 lbs, usually just the odd fish picked up whilst trolling. Several mako sharks were caught with one actually very big aboard “Sundancer” at 150 lbs, released. The others were all small at 25 to 60 lbs. Rooster fish action has been hot off of the Old Lighthouse, Wesley Brough from Cabo was fishing from the beach with a spinning rod, 20 lb test and an orange popper, when he hooked a huge rooster that he struggled with for an hour. When he finally thought he had it licked a shark snatched it right from the surf, in one bite taking the whole body of the 60 lb fish leaving just the head for Wesley to recover. This was a big roosterfish but the shark was even bigger (see photo), Wesley is a little over 6 and a half feet, see what the fish would have looked like.
LOCATION: 95 spot, 11.50 spot, Destiladeres, Punta Gorda, the tuna were off of Lands End as far up as Balmaceda.
WEATHER CONDITIOINS: Baking hot all week, but as we close the week, the cool weather has returned to the Pacific with blustery winds, whilst the Cortez side remains much warmer.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 68 to 73 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
