PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
June 15th to 21st, 2007-06-27
BILLFISH: Not the best week of the year for marlin this week, but towards the end of this period we did see some very nice catches of up to five striped marlin in one day for some boats. “Falcon” released five for Paul Pare from Stuart, Florida on the 21st fishing 15 miles out in the Sea of Cortez at the 11.50 spot. The day before this, “Rebecca” had a five fish day for David Hamrick, Bob Arnold and Mike Sack from Thousand Oaks, California, also in the Sea of Cortez, but this time 20 miles off of Palmilla. “Tracy Ann” alerted by Rebecca, caught and released four in the same area for the Rubinos also from Thousand Oaks. This same day “La Brisa” was a little closer at the 95 spot and was fortunate to release four stripers and land a 20 lb dorado for a group, guess from where….Thousand Oaks, California. These were the best catches of the week. Live bait was what worked best for all of these catches. Earlier boats averaged one striped marlin and some days close to half the boats were “skunked”. So to sum up it was basically on one day off the next. Water temperatures continue to be colder than normal which could be a factor in the lower catches. Our overall catch success rate this week, for all species combined was seventy two percent, with fifty two percent of charters catching marlin. Pisces anglers caught a total of 61 striped marlin this week, all released. On another note, by way of an update, our boats called in two commercial boats, that appeard to be operating, closer than allowed. We contacted the navy who responded immediately, impounding both boats, which had shark, marlin and giant manta rays aboard.
OTHER SPEICES: It was nice to see an increase on dorado this week and as we get into the hotter summer months numbers should continue to climb. It was seldom that boats caught more than one or two, though occasionally there were up to four fish. Weights were average at 12 to 27 lbs and overall eighteen percent of charters caught this species. Tuna catches were very slow, though “Yahoo” did manage to boat seven between 20 and 40 lbs 35 miles straight out from Land’s End for Paul Pare from Stuart Florida, obviously a lucky guy or a great angler as he released 5 marlin earlier in the week. Inshore there was a variety of fish such as yellowtail, skipjacks, pompano, roosterfish, pargo and a few small mako sharks.
LOCATION: All over; Los Frailes, 11.50, Destiladeras, Favor Viejo, 35 miles out from Cabo, 95 spot, 30 miles off of San Jose, Palmilla, La Herradura.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas mostly calm, some wind on the Pacific.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
