Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

NOVEMBER 23rd to 29th, 2007 OVERALL CATCH SUCCESS RATE 95% BILLFISH: Another outstanding week here in Cabo, even though we saw a sharp drop on the number of anglers in town, which was unusual as we expect an influx of fisherman around Thanksgiving. Nevertheless the striped marlin bite continued unabated with our top boat this week, “La Brisa” releasing an incredible 30 striped marlin on November 25th for Don Armstrong, from Park City, Utah at the Finger Banks, who was fishing alone and did very well to handle so many fish. In fact all of the boats that had double digit catches on marlin went to the Finger Banks this week, located outside of our normal fishing grounds at a little over fifty miles. Fishing was still very good at the Golden Gate but catches of marlin at this location was seldom more than six in one day. This week we did have rough seas a couple of days and some boats chose to go to the Cortez side to fish for tuna and dorado. Hence the lower marlin catches, however, the number of fish caught was still high at a total of 172 striped marlin, which worked out to a sixty four percent catch rate on billfish. Other boats that did well were “Halcon” for 18 stripers released, plus 4 dorado for Samuel Carter, JC, Tom and Sam and Brian Miller, from Evergreen, Colorado on the 23rd. On November 27th “Fearless” released 15 for Don Watters, Stephen Henager, Bill and Victoria Curleu, all from Washington. “Bill Collector” had 17 for Mark Chiavetta from San Jose, California on November 28th. Next day out this same day had 14 released for Johnny Mack Powers from Texas. Other boats fishing closer caught between 1 and 3 marlin plus some tuna and dorado. Live bait was still the ticket. OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were quite good with forty one percent of boats catching between one and seven fish in the 15 to 30 lb class; it was nice to see some larger fish up to 45 lbs. Total number of dorado caught for our fleet was 44. Tuna catches percentage wise were lower at twenty two percent; however the actual number of fish caught was higher at 85 total. Catches were from 1 to 23 fish per boat with weights from 10 to 35 lbs; both live bait and lures worked and they were caught at the Golden Gate, Finger Banks and at various locations on the Sea of Cortez. Inshore we are beginning to see smaller game catches increase for species such as rooster fish, yellowtail, sierra and skipjack. Some boats had up to 10 smallish roosters, whilst others did very well on sierra. Six small makos were also caught up to 50 lbs. Twenty two percent of boats caught smaller game varieties. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Mostly clear skies, though we did have much needed rain all day Thursday. Some whitecaps on the Pacific, other days dead calm. LOCATION: Finger Banks, Golden Gate, Los Arcos, Cerro Colorado, Chileno, Destiladeres, Palmilla……..pretty much the whole spectrum of our normal fishing grounds. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 74 F BEST LURES: Live bait for marlin, assorted lures/feathers for tuna as well as sardines, dorado mostly green/ yellow lures for dorado, yoyos and caballito for roosters.
