Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 27th to February 4th, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: The legend continues in Cabo with marlin fishing still the best game in town with any boat wanting to catch one achieving this goal pretty easily. Golden Gate is still the very best area for day boats, though we did have one boat "Falcon" that went to the Finger Bank and released fifteen marlin for Mike Connolly on February 3rd. This same day "Andale" released eleven for Tom Ryan, from Billings, Montana and on February 1st, "Tracy Ann" had ten striped marlin and a mako shark for Luis Basurto and Noel Perez from Cancun, along with our very own Mario Bañaga who got some fantastic photos. Top boat was "El Gallo" with fifteen striped marlin on January 30th, for Brice Barr, Richard Stoke, Travis Butters, Robert Helms, Chad Ford & William Whitley all from Detroit, Michigan. The following day this same boat had seventeen striped marlin and a 150 lb mako shark for James Dailey and friends also from Detroit. The Golden Gate is still alive with action, lots of bait, sardines, mackerel, pelicans, sea lions and whales amongst the marlin. Anglers continued to hook up in perfect conditions with the least marlin caught one and many catching between five and ten. Ninety two percent of charters caught marlin giving us a total of 228 fish of which 226 were released; weights are from 100 to 200 lbs.
OTHER SPECIES: This week again, it really depending on where you fished as to what you caught. At the Golden Gate marlin of course were the most abundant fish, but surprisingly nineteen percent of boats caught mako sharks ranging in size from 50 to 150 lbs. There were also some dorado picked up. One unusual story was a huge yellowfin tuna, fought aboard "Spartacus; they were fishing for marlin at Golden Gate and has a live bait that they had tossed out when something big, loomed up and grabbed the bait, rigged with 40 lb tackle. The anglers aboard struggled for the next four hours and thirty five minutes with the huge tuna, that was estimated at 300 lbs plus, before is snapped the line. Inshore on the Pacific, sierra and roosterfish were found. In the other direction, at Punta Gorda and Iman, boats caught fair numbers of tuna up to 50 lbs as well as good numbers of dorado in the 30 to 40 lb class. Wahoo were also caught in fair numbers in this area up to 45 lbs.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Perfect…clear sunny skies, flat seas.
LOCATION: Golden Gate, San Jose, Punta Gorda, Iman.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 74 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
Based on the catches of Pisces by Tracy Ehrenberg
Luis Basurto from Cancun, Mexico, ready to release this striped marlin, estimated at 185lbs.
