Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 2nd to 8th, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 78%
BILLFISH: We are still plagued with blustery winds on the Pacific and boats were hard pressed to find fish this week, with the exception of a couple of days, April 3rd and 4th, were some boats did exceptionally well fishing at Destilederas on the Cortez side. "C Rod" released six striped marlin and boated a dorado on the 3rd for Jeff Hartman, Kevin Blodford, John & Dennis Carey and Jon Casey, all from Saint Louis, Missouri. Next day out, fishing this same area "La Brisa" caught six, releasing five for Andrea, Marika and Christina Harti fishing with friends from California and New York; they also caught a small mako shark. We had some anglers that travelled a really long way to get here; Gerald Snyman and R. Cuthbert came all the way from Zimbabwe to fish aboard "Falcon" and release six striped marlin, all caught on live bait, April 4th. Seas are calmer between Cabo and San Jose but the East Cape was also shut down a couple of days for fishing, due to strong winds, so there was a reduced are that was fishable and even then it wasn't easy to find marlin. Just twenty five percent of charters caught marlin this week and out total catch was twenty three fish.
OTHER SPECIES: Assorted small game was the most widely caught fish this week with fifty percent of charters catching sierra, up to eleven fish in a day, large squid up to 40 lbs, a few skipjack, the odd mako shark, jack crevalle, pretty good numbers of yellowtail, pompano and a few snappers. Dorado catches were fair with twenty eight percent of charters catching between one and three fish up to 25 lbs. Just one boat had tuna this week, "Bill Collector" caught four 20-25 lb'ers 20 miles out from the Old Lighthouse for Andrew Statham and Tanis Elliott from, Vancouver, Canada.
LOCATION: Destiladeres, 4 miles out from Pozo de Cota, 11.50 spot, 25 miles out from Land's End, Palmilla, and Punta Gorda.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Sunny, mostly clear, and very windy on the Pacific with whitecaps, seas average to calm on the Cortez side.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 72 F
BEST LURES: Live mackerel, petrolero, red, yoyos, and rapalas
