100% Success Rate in Cabo Fishery

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
November 28, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: This week we again had fantastic results on Cabo fishing, resulting in a one hundred percent catch rate, in other words everybody caught something. The marlin catch success rate was ninety percent and those that didn't catch marlin simply didn't want to, they preferred something for the table. The prolific Golden Gate on the Pacific continued to produce the goods, with some amazing catches by determined anglers. Mark Chiavetta from San Jose, Ca had a crazy number of marlin aboard "Bill Collector" on November 25th, catching and releasing fifty two striped marlin with friends aboard as well as eight tuna…..this is real, we are not making this up. Earlier in the week Mark also had two days on this same boat where he released twenty two fish per day. Chasing up Bill Collector's numbers was "C Rod" who released thirty striped marlin for the Pascal family (David, Andrew, Alex and Robert) from Bluebell, Florida as well as catching five tuna and a dorado on November 26th. These even higher marlin numbers, than we have had over the last few weeks, may be due to the moon being at its darkest phase right now, making the fish hungrier during the day. "C Rod" also had another great day with twenty releases for Chad Deis, Steve Scates & David Burgess, from New York. Catches could have been even higher, but a lot of people decided to stay home for Thanksgiving this year and to be honest the charter business was slow this week. Again we had lots of great catches, practically every boat every day had from three to eight marlin. Our total catch for the week was 483 four hundred and eighty three marlin of which 473 were released. Those brought in averaged 130 lbs and we also released a solitary sailfish.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were fair, with thirty seven percent of charters catching fish in the 10 to 30 lb range. Catches were from one to eight fish and were usually found on the outer edge of Golden Gate. Tuna catches were much slower but then again very few boats were targeting them, preferring to stay for the surer marlin and dorado. Just eleven percent of boats caught tuna with catches of one to eight fish up to 40 lbs. Inshore pangas are starting to see a lot more roosterfish and the sierra are starting up as are pargos and needlefish.
LOCATION: Golden Gate
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, flat seas.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 81 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
