Swedes Have Record Catch in Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
November 21, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

November 13th to 19th, 2008
Overall Catch Success Rate 99%
BILLFISH: We are so blessed to have perfect weather, clean air and fantastic fishing. The striped marlin bite continues unabated in Los Cabos with record numbers of marlin in the 100 to 130 lb class. Anglers of the week were Mike Nosal and friends from New Jersey and Philadelphia, who fished aboard 60 ft Spartacus at Sea for three days and achieved an amazing 78 striped marlin, all released. Another group that we have to mention are the ones that traveled all the way from Sweden, namely Mattias Ekelund, Anders Lundgren, Lars Papp, Mats Wildh, Mattias Ericsson and Daniel Turnstedt during their visit they totaled 94 striped marlin, 19 yellowfin tuna, 8 dorado and 4 wahoo, despite some hitches on their way home turning the journey into a 52 hour ordeal, they feel it was well worth it. "C Rod" had a 20 marlin day on November 19th for Steve Scates & Mike Turner from San Jose, California fishing with Dave Burgess and Chad Toes from Clinton, New York. Bait did become scarce again but most of the time crews were able to catch it on the way to the fishing grounds. We did see a bit more variety this week, instead of crews concentrating solely on marlin they managed to catch good amounts of dorado and some tuna and wahoo. Pretty much everybody had a fish story this week and we applaud all of our anglers for giving us a total of 561 (five hundred and sixty one) striped marlin this week with all but four released. Those brought in averaged 120 lbs. Ninety one percent of charters caught marlin.
OTHER SPECIES: After marlin dorado were the next most likely fish to be caught with thirty eight percent of charters catching between one and six fish in the 20 to 30 lb class. Some were found at the Golden Gate and others closer to Cabo by Gaspareño and mostly preferred live bait. Yellow fin tuna catches improved slightly with sixteen percent of boats finding between one and thirteen fish. Some were found as close as four miles from the Old Lighthouse, with top boat "Andrea" for 13 tuna, with the Swedish guys aboard. It was nice to see an increase on wahoo as they have been noticeably absent of late, "Ruthless" however managed four, albeit small ones on November 15th as well as four tuna and a dorado again for the Swedes.
LOCATION: Guess where?....Yep, Golden Gate, plus a few other locations such as Gaspareño and the Old Lighthouse for smaller game.
WEATHER: Perfect…flat seas, clear sunny skies, low 80's daytime temps, low to mid 70´s nighttime.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 82 F
BEST LURES: Live mackerel.

No, that's not a rock star playing a guitar, it's Swedish angler Anders Lundgren, fishing aboard Rebecca on November 14th about to release one of the fourteen marlin they let go that day.
