Two Big Blue Marlin in Cabo San Lucas

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
July 17, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

JULY 11th to 16th, 2008

Overall Catch Success Rate 68%

BILLFISH: There were not a huge amount of anglers in town this week which is reflected in our catch rates; if fewer boats are going out then less fish are caught. This is a shame, as blue marlin are starting to show up and some notable catches were had this week. We heard of a 500 lb blue marlin that came in at the main dock and then "Ruthless" had a nice blue that weighed in at 425 lbs on July 15th. The fish was caught by Melany, Howard and Dan Levenson from Potomac Maryland. The fish took a lime green lure 17 miles off of Cerro Blanco and took three hours to subdue on 60 lb test. Most other billfish catches were of one or two striped marlin with an occasional sailfish here and there. "Ruthless" was the hot boat this week with two striped marlin on July 12th at the Jaime Bank on the Pacific for Randy Houghton and Aaron Stacy, from Corpus Christi, Texas; plus the only wahoo of the week caught in the complete opposite direction at Destiladeras on a green/orange lure by Coley Maynard from Cary, North Carolina, weighing in at 40 lbs. Thirty two percent of charters caught billfish this week. The feeling is that with the onset of hotter weather, fishing should be wide open within the next 15 days. Pisces anglers caught a total of 10 striped marlin, 1 blue and 2 sailfish this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado and tuna catches were on a par this week and again we saw some nice dorado up to almost 50 lbs, usually just single fish and more rarely two per boat. Tuna catches tended to be better that in when located boats could catch up to seven in the 15 to 40 lb class. Lots of roosterfish inshore as well as some jack crevalle, the odd grouper and bonita. In San Jose, there were lots of red snapper from 12 to 25 lbs, at a place called San Luis, between two and seven fish per boat. They are also catching sierra, lots of small pompano, and good numbers of sailfish and have had some encounters with blue marlin. Now that we have an office in San Jose and dockmaster Mario at La Playita we are getting firsthand reports of what is happening over there.

LOCATION: Punta Gorda, Destiladeras, Cerro Colorado, 11.50 spot, San Jaime up to 25 miles out, 15 to 20 miles off of Cerro Blanco.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot, humid, partly overcast, seas calm.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 81 F

BEST LURES: Live bait for striped marlin, green lures for blues and dorado.
