BILLFISH: We are finishing the main tournament week here in Cabo with the Los Cabos Billfish awards last weekend and the Bisbee awards coming up this weekend. Surprisingly the largest fish were caught in a tournament sandwiched in between these two events, though hardly ever recognized, the Bisbee Alumni, a two day, lower entry fee competition, seen as a warm up for the main event; produced an 870 lb blue marlin aboard Marlin Mast, the second largest fish ever caught in any tournament in Cabo history, as well as a 510 lb black marlin, caught aboard "Bottom Line". In the Los Cabos Billfish qualifying fish, over 300 lbs were scarce in fact there was just on qualifying fish that swept the winnings, taking $500,000.00 for "Karma", other prizes were given for dorado, tuna and wahoo as well as most marlin released which went to captain Jobe on "Get Over It". People thought that this years' Bisbee might be affected by the economy but they saw a good turn out with 141 boats entering, but again qualifying fish were few and far between. Day one yielded no fish over the 300 lb mark, day two produced what would be turn out to be the largest of the tournament and one of only two qualifying fish; "Bad Market" brought in a 457 lb fish, taken on a blue and white lure at the Herradura. On the final day of the tournament "Hang ‘Em High" brought in a 313 lb blue that they hooked up on a lure just 7 minutes before the end of the tournament. Angler Chip Wagner pumped the fish to the boat in just 20 minutes. Though this fish was smaller it looks like it will take the lion's share of the monies as they were entered across the board. From what we hear "Andale" is set to receive a prize for releases, but all results are still not final. In regular news, fishing was outstanding for non tournament fishermen. Pisces anglers totaled an impressive 244 striped marlin, 5 blue marlin and 12 sailfish. Seventy two percent of charters managed to catch billfish. Some of the most notable catches were two blue marlin aboard "Valerie" on two separate days, with the fish between 200 and 280 lbs. "Adriana" released a 300 lb blue as well as three striped marlin on October 21st, for Bruce Cantrell and friends from Oklahoma. October 20th was the most prolific striped marlin day, when "C Rod" released 17 stripers for Kevin Humphries and buddies from South Carolina, at the Golden Gate. This same day " Bill Collector" also released 17 marlin and caught 10 yellowfin tuna and 8 dorado for Russell Inserra, Elliott Kennedy and Kevin Keelan from Houston, Texas. On October 21st "Yahoo" & "Bill Collector" both had 12 marlin each and "Cabolero" released 4 stripers, 1 blue marlin and 1 sailfish for Diane & Ken Stelly from Lafayette, Louisiana. There were many other outstanding catches, too numerous to mention, but weather is great and anglers are happy.
OTHER SPECIES: After marlin, dorado was the most widely caught species with sixty one percent of boats catching between one and ten fish in the 20 to 40 lb class. Total number of dorado caught for us this week was 276. Tuna catches were on the slow side with just six percent of boats catching between one and ten fish. Largest caught was 70 lbs. We had a couple of wahoo, at 27 and 55 lbs respectively, one small mako and a couple of roosters and skipjacks.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Perfect, clear, sunny skies, flat seas.
LOCATION: Golden Gate, Herradura, Los Arcos.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 84 F
BEST LURES: Mackerel, sardines, the majority of boats in the tournament switched to slow trolling live bait, such as skipjacks….however, lures proved best this time blue /white, green/black.
