Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

JUNE4th to 10th, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 99%
BILLFISH: We had some rather hot weather this week which was a detonator for better fishing, even though once again, we had poor numbers of anglers in town.
The best day of the week was June 9th when we had some great catches, such as four striped marlin released and one dorado for the Dudenhoeffer family from Jefferson City, Missouri. This same day "Ruthless" released four marlin, for Baker and Charley Gentry from Fort Worth, Texas. Everybody fished the same location this day, which was Destiladeras about 22 miles up the Sea of Cortez from Cabo. Earlier in the week boats has luck closer to Cabo, such as "Ruthless" releasing three striped marlin just three miles from the arch, one on live bait and two on black/red lures, for Kristi and Eston Geonetta from Lakewood, Colorado, who also boated a 30 lb dorado. Cabeza de Ballena was also a good location earlier in the week with boats getting from one to three marlin just two miles from shore- in fact on June 5th three marlin per boat was the average catch. Seventy nine percent of charters caught marlin this week, giving us a total of 45 stripers between 130 and 170 lbs, all but two were released.
OTHER SPECIES: We are pretty excited about the wahoo right now, as in the last eight days we have had three over 70 lbs, which is a size we have not seen in a several years. Last week we reported a 77 lb'er and this week we had another 70 lb'er again "Ruthless",( who caught the big fish last report); the angler was Thomas McAlpin from Madison, who also went on to release three striped marlin with Eric McAlpine; the wahoo took a purple lure. "La Brisa" caught the other large wahoo, right around the 70 lb mark on June 10th, for Pat Greever from McKinley, Texas. Dorado catches rebounded giving us a catch success rate of forty two percent, with larger fish present; the average being 30-35 lbs. No tuna for us this week. We had a couple of small hammerheads up to 60 lbs plus skipjack, sierra, bonito and jack crevalle, inshore.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas calm on the Cortez, a little choppy on the Pacific. Daytime air temps in the 90's.
LOCATION: Chileno, Cabeza de Ballena, Destiladeras.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 75 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito, live mackerel, Black/red, Black/purple, green, Pink.
