PISCES FISH REPORT
MAY 15th to 21st, 2008
Overall Catch Success Rate 82%
BILLFISH: A combination of windy weather and a large moon contributed to the downturn in marlin catches this week. However, there were still boats that released up to four marlin in a day, such as "Eureka", fishing at the 11.50 spot, with Greg Gilbert from Australia aboard, on May 20th. Other boats released between one and three marlin, but to be truthful we haven't seen such wind in March for years. The strong winds caused never ending whitecaps, so much so, that the Port Captain closed on the Port on the last day of this period. All of the international anglers visiting last week for the IGFA World Offshore Championship have left town at this time, but we were thrilled to have the top boat of the event, "Bill Collector" with captain Julio Gonzalez receiving a trophy during the awards dinner. It is interesting to note that the top three teams in the event fished practice days with Pisces before the competition. Live bait was scarce on some days and for the first time in over 20 years the price has gone up from $2.00 to $3.00 per fish. The preferred mackerel was almost impossible to get, but hardier caballito could be purchased; this bait is more endurable but usually second choice for marlin. Pisces anglers caught a total of 65 striped marlin and 1 sailfish, all of which were released. Fifty three percent of charters caught billfish.
OTHER SPECIES: After marlin, dorado were the most widely caught species, with thirty six percent of charters catching between one and four fish in the 15 to 30 lb class. Most of the dorado were picked up on lures whilst trolling for marlin. Boats trying to avoid the whitecaps hugged the shoreline and fished for small game. Jack crevalle, skipjack, rooster fish, sierra, needlefish, pargo and pompano were all caught in varying numbers by pangas. "Bill Collector" did well to catch 25 yellowtail in the Punta Gorda area. We had just one solitary wahoo this week, 40 lbs aboard "Libre" on May 18th for William Roach from Midland Texas, who with friends, went on to also release a striped marlin. No yellowfin tuna for us this week.
