Yellow tail beats sierra catches, marlin coming back?

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
April 17, 2009
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 87%
BILLFISH: This week was again very slow for marlin with just a smattering of fish caught, though we heard reports of boats seeing lots of them, but that they were totally uninterested in eating. One boat reported sighting 15 in a morning 20 miles out from Land's End, but that they would not even look at the bait proffered. Nevertheless we did have seven marlin caught this week, all striped, ranging in size from 110 to 150 lbs. On April 14th, the boats fished the 95 spot on the Cortez side and three managed to get marlin on live mackerel. What a change to a few months ago, when if boats didn't get more than ten marlin in a day they didn't make the fish report! Well, no problem, we know it's just that time of year. Most captains stayed closer to shore and went for what they thought would be a more sure catch on smaller game. Just twenty three percent of boats caught marlin this week, with all but one released.
OTHER SPECIES: Though marlin were thin, there was quite a bit of activity on smaller game with twenty nine percent of boats catching dorado, though seldom more than one or two up to 25 lbs. Once again people had fun pulling in large squid up to 35 lbs. There were plenty of sierra. Some cabrilla, fair amounts of roosterfish, lots of yellowtail, which is fantastic eating, and a few mako sharks, plus a solitary hammerhead shark. No tuna this week, which is a shame as they should be here in schools by now.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Sunny, but still windy, rough seas on the Pacific, fair on the Cortez.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 71 F
BEST LURES: Live bait
