San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -
November 11, 2001
The busy November fishing season is definitely living up to expectations, as crowds of anglers are keeping sportfishing fleets operating at full capacity. The weather continued to be unseasonably warm for this time of year, sunny days with high temperatures of 90 degrees, this is about 5 degrees warmer than normal. Ocean conditions have been very calm on the Sea of Cortez side of the Peninsula, as the prevailing wind from the northeast have not started to cause havoc yet. Water temperature is in the low 80's and blue water is being found within several miles of shore. Supplies of sardinas are dwindling due to the heavy pressure of supplying so many boats every day, but most boats were able to obtain enough bait for their fishing day.
Overall catches included yellowfin tuna, dorado, wahoo, amberjack, skipjack, sierra, pargo,
rainbow runners and marlin. The most consistent local areas were from the Gordo Banks to Iman, with the yellowfin tuna being the most common species being caught. The bite has tapered off since a couple of days after the last full moon and average catches per boat ranged from 3 to 8 fish in combination.
This past week Cabo San Lucas hosted the third annual WON Tuna Tournament and once again it was a very well organized and successful event, congratulations to the winning team on the 46 ft. Bertram " Stimulator " and captain Jay Bush, first he won the Bisbee Black & Blue and then the WON Tuna Tournament, lightning does strike twice. The larger tuna are now being found further offshore, some 25 to 30 miles out, mixed with porpoise and also by blind jig strikes. The tuna that are now on the Gordo Banks are mostly weighing in the 40 to 80 pound range, they have been taken on live sardinas, chunk bait and chihuil. The better bite was earlier in the morning, as once all of the boats arrived the fish proved to be more spooky. The most common set up was using the live sardinas on 2/0 hooks and 50 pound tackle, and many fish were lost even on this size gear. The bait size made it difficult to use too heavy of line and the tuna were becoming more line shy with the increased fishing pressure.
Dorado were spread out throughout the region but were not being found in any large concentrations. Trolling lures seemed to be the best way to find them, average weights were 10 to 20 pounds, with some larger bulls also found. A few wahoo were taken early in the week on lures and bait, but by the weekend they had become very elusive. Some sierra are now starting to show up in local waters, as were a few roosterfish, along the beaches of San Jose del Cabo mullet were being found in unusually high numbers for this time of year.
Over the weekend there was a big bite on larger marlin that developed on the Gordo Banks, there were huge schools of skipjack and this seemed to attract the marlin, on Saturday there were at least 8 black marlin caught that all weighed from 300 to 500 pounds, several of the blacks were taken from La Playita pangas. With the warmer than usual water and plentiful baitfish, we look for the big marlin to hang around a little longer than usual this season.
Good Fishing, Eric
