San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -
May 12, 2002
This past week saw increased numbers of sport fishermen traveling to the Los Cabos area, apparently enticed by improved fishing reports and the summer like weather. Sunny days, with temperatures of 90 degrees made for pleasant conditions on the water. Swells were minimal, with water temperatures averaging 75 to 77 degrees and clean deep blue water was now within a few miles of shore. More baitfish were moving into the warming local waters, including big schools of flying fish, bolito and skipjack. Live mackerel and sardinas have been readily available from the commercial pangeros. Most charters were taking a combination of live bait and trolling lures on their daily trips and accounting for equal success with both techniques. Fleets have concentrated efforts from the 95 spot to the Gordo Banks, finding spread out action for striped marlin, dorado, wahoo, along with a mix of quality bottom action for pargo, amberjack and grouper.
The wahoo action on the Gordo Banks tapered off by mid-week, though a few lucky anglers have still accounted for fish, most of the strikes came early in the day on high speed trolling lures, such as rapala, marauder or skirted lead heads. Wahoo were ranging from 30 pounds to 60 pounds, one 90 pound 'hoo was reported by an angler off of a Palmilla cruiser. Many wahoo are being hooked from boats trolling for marlin and dorado, in the blue offshore water, these fish are now migrating open water, attracted by the warm currents and plentiful food supply. Expect the wahoo to go back on a good bite as the moon phase builds back toward the full phase. In the mean time there has been a big influx of dorado into the area, with boats finding the fish throughout the region in larger concentrations, over the weekend boats were averaging several nice dorado apiece, and the fish were ranging from 15 to 25 pounds. Hitting on a variety of trolled lures, as well as on live and dead bait. With all of the flying fish now around and the showing of bolito this past week, we anticipate more fish to move in and we should have some incredible dorado action for the coming months. Still no reports about yellowfin tuna off of the San Jose del Cabo area, and particularly on the Gordo Banks, where there has been an absence of tuna action four some five months now and has everyone asking " when are the tuna going to be here?" It is only a matter of time before they do show up, apparently some condition is just not to their liking now, with all of the other species moving in, surely the yellowfin will once again be bending rods before long.
Striped marlin action continues to provide anglers with excellent opportunities, the billfish were being found throughout a wide area, with the 95 spot off of Cabo San Lucas being one of the most consistent spots, fleets have been finding fish spread out, to north of the Gordo Banks. Most boats that specifically targeted the marlin were averaging at least one billfish per day, many had multiple fish, along with several other species in combination, mainly dorado and wahoo. Trolled lures through the blue water has been the main plan of attack, covering lots of distance, marlin have been hitting lures as well as live bait, though the percentage of fish landed was higher with live bait. The stripers were feeding on squid, and were very healthy, averaging 120 to 200 pounds.
Not much activity close to the shoreline, though there are sizable schools of sardinas, attracting some sierra, croaker and jacks, but there are still no large concentrations of mullet. The roosterfish are due to make their annual migration through these parts within the next few weeks. Maybe this will be the summer season's first test to see how much damage the inshore gill nets this past winter have actually really done.
Good Fishing, Eric
