Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

Capt. Eric Brictson

San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -

July 7, 2002

This past week had the same old story, even though we are now in the month of July, the southern most part of Baja has continued to be plagued with cold water currents that have been sweeping in from the Pacific. Water temperatures off of Cabo San Lucas dipped into the 60's, but over the weekend the current had switched and warmer water temperatures of 74 to 76 degrees were now being reported off of San Jose del Cabo and north towards Los Frailes. The clarity of the water has varied throughout the region, there were greenish murky areas found and then there would be other spots where the water was deep blue, this was mainly 10 or more miles offshore. There were good supplies of live bait, with mullet and mackerel being more abundant than were sardinas or caballito. A persistent swell from the south has made the launching for the panga fleets off of

La Playita beach more difficult, but at this time the boats were still able to get out. Overall fishing was still far below normal Cabo standards, though there were signs of encouragement as the water temperatures warmed, but there was no particular hot spot and the overall action was not consistent. One day the striped marlin would bite well, along with some football sized yellowfin tuna and a few dorado. Then the very next day the same areas would not produce much of anything.

Roosterfish have proved to be the best bet for getting into some action, though this bite has tapered off compared to recent weeks, still the boats targeting these inshore gamefish have averaged several fish each trip, with weights ranging from 10 to 40 pounds. There was also more jack crevalle being hooked on the trolled live baits. The amberjack bite slowed down, though there were some quality fish still in the area, spread out near different rock piles, striking trolled and drifted bait, as well as on iron jigs off the bottom. These same areas produced a mix of other species, though none of them were overly abundant, bonita, pargo, cabrilla, triggerfish and skipjack were most common. Yellowfin tuna did make there way into the fish counts, but they were small sized fish, mostly under 10 pounds, very scattered, hitting on medium sized feathers and plugs, and generally found further offshore. There has been an unusual marine haze hanging around for the past weeks, most likely created by the cooler marine water meeting the warm desert air, and this has kept most of the smaller boats from venturing too far offshore, it also made it very difficult for pangueros to use the local traditional land marks to triangulate and locate their favorite fishing grounds.

Dorado action had been completely shut down by the cold water, but now there are a few being hooked in the warmer blue water found offshore, most of the fish being solitary and ranging in the 15 to 25 pound class. The striped marlin were coming up on the trolled lures, but the most successful techniques were either dropping back live baits into the lure spread, as a fish came up, or casting out in front of tailing fish.

We now patiently wait for conditions to stabilize and for the action to improve, keeping our fingers crossed that no more cold water moves back for the rest of the summer.

Good Fishing, Eric
