San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -
August 19, 2002
Sorry about this late update, I just pulled in after driving down from San Diego. Anyway this is what my crew tells me. Sunny weather has dominated things, very warm and humid conditions, with minimal swells. The dorado bite continues to provide the bulk of the action for the panga fleet, with fish being spread out in all directions, hitting both lures and various baits, which have been a combination of mullet and sardinas. Fish have ranged in sizes from 10 to 40 pounds, with the average catch being from 2 to 4 per panga. Also there were a few small yellowfin tuna mixed in the catches. Sunday one Gordo Banks Panga landed two wahoo weighing in the 40 pound range, they hit near Iman Bank on skirted lures, with one other 'hoo being hooked and lost. A panga from Palmilla also had wahoo, three of them, and throughout the week they have been being hooked a scattering of these sought after speedsters near this same area, with the majority of the action coming early in the morning. More fishermen are now starting to show up despite the hot muggy weather, most likely due the improved fish reports. If the wahoo start to bite consistently I am sure even more anglers will be heading towards Cabo.
Not much reported on billfish, at least from the panga fleet out of La Playita, with the exception of a handful of sailfish taken bait off of the Gordo Banks and a couple of smaller sized blue marlin. The Inner Gordo Bank has been holding schooling yellowfin tuna, but it has been difficult to entice them into feeding on the live sardinas, they will come up to the chum but shy away from the baits with hooks and boat noise. Just of few of these tuna are being accounted for the few anglers that have targeted the Banks. Water temperature has been in the low 80's and is clear and blue within a couple of miles from shore.
Local divers have been telling stories of big numbers of lobsters along the rocky shorelines to the north of Punta Gorda. The beach bite for snook has once again picked back up. Hot spot being near the San Jose Estuary exit to the ocean, which was manfully opened up this past week and world-class sized snook were hitting on a variety of cast spoons and also on bait. Snook to 50 pounds were reported and at last one is going to be submitted for a new IGFA world record.
Good Fishing, Eric
