San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -
December 8, 2002
After a week of cooler than normal weather the conditions were now back to normal, ideal temperatures in the 80s, lots of sunshine and with very little wind. Anglers found the fishing
action to be spread out, fleets scouted out areas on the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. There was no particular hot spot, though there was good variety available, most common catches were sierra, pargo, skipjack, dorado, triggerfish, needlefish, cabrilla and there were signs of wahoo starting to bite again, as well as some striped marlin and yellowfin tuna. Water temperature ranged from 76 to 78 degrees and in recent days the clarity has been improving, there was blue water found within several miles of shore. With the weather and the moon phase now becoming more favorable, we anticipate the fishing action to pick up in the next couple of weeks. Crowds are much lighter than they were in November, and the limited pressure should only improve anglers' chances.
Dorado were being caught throughout the area, not in great numbers, but most boats were accounting for a couple per trip, sizes ranged to over 30 pounds. Striking on all types of lures and various baits, with many of the fish being found close to shore, just outside of where the sierra action was. Some anglers were lucky enough to find floating debris offshore and they were able to load up on dorado, but for the most part the dorado were found in small schools. Most of the pangas were fishing closer to shore, this is where the action was more consistent, though most of the fish were smaller, great light tackle sport. Especially for the sierra, which would readily strike on rapalas, hoochies and sardinas, averaging 2 to 5 pounds. Pargo, cabrilla and triggerfish were also found close to the beaches and were helping to fill the fish boxes with quality fillets.
Only limited action for yellowfin tuna, mostly smaller football sized fish, big problem was dealing with all of the needlefish that have been found in all directions, hard to get through them to try and catch the other fish. There were reports of tuna of 80 to100 pounds being found off of Los Frailes, but this was out of range for local fleets, and hopes were that they would move closer. Striped marlin were found on Pacific, scattered action, hitting on lures as well as mackerel.
After virtually no action for the past two weeks wahoo did show signs of activity over the weekend, several fish up to 50 pounds were caught on live chihuil from the Gordo Banks to Iman. Many other wahoo were seen coming up on trolled baits, but were finicky in striking the rigged baits. Trolled marauders also accounted for a handful of wahoo and we look for the bite to improve this coming week, as long as the weather continues on this latest trend. This could be the week that the wahoo go on the bite, before long it will be time that they migrate to warmer southern waters.
Good Fishing, Eric
