San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -
March 30, 2003
The month of March saw escalating crowds of tourists arriving In Los Cabos, sportfishing fleets were busy, spring breakers were here and life was good, but it now appears that recent world events has everybody holding back and watching what unfolds before making any advance travel plans and only time will tell what becomes of this spring season in Cabo. In the mean time the weather has been cool for local standards, as a windy cloud front swept through the Southern Baja
Peninsula, daytime temperature still reached close to 80 degrees and conditions were pleasant.
Water temperatures varied from 66 degrees on the Pacific to 70 degrees near the Gordo Banks and was a greenish color close to shore, with blue water found several miles offshore.
Anglers found varying degrees of success this week for striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, sierra, pargo, roosterfish, jack crevalle and amberjack. Action ranged from incredibly slow to excellent, most common catch close to shore was for sierra and the main species found offshore this past week was yellowfin tuna. Live sardinas were hard to come by, schools of baitfish are scattered and pangueros will need to scout for other resources. Anglers used more artificial lures due to limited supplies of bait, rapalas and hoochies were particularly affective for (2-6 lb.) sierra along the shoreline, consistent action was found near Punta Gorda and Red Hill.
A strong current has been moving cooler water into this area, for this reason there were very few dorado reported in recent days, red crabs are still concentrated on the Gordo Banks, but the flow of water made it nearly impossible to successfully fish deep rocky areas, so the majority of fleets continue to concentrate on surface fish. Yellowfin tuna highlighted the catch for the cruiser fleet out of Palmilla, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday, when they found big numbers of tuna in the 50 to 150 pound class, located among schooling porpoise from Desteladera to La Laguna, 12 to 20 miles from shore. Over the weekend yellowfin tuna were found within the range of local panga fleets, within several miles of shore off of La Laguna, they were readily striking trolled lures and live bait, these fish were not as large as the fish encountered earlier in the week by the cruisers, but they were quality fish ranging 20 to 60 pounds, with most boats scoring two to five tuna. Striped marlin were scattered, some were hooked on lures in the same areas where tuna were found and were in the 100 to 140 pound range.
There were a handful of shore fishermen that reported hooking into snook this past week off of the La Playita area, hitting on sardinas and chrome lures, this was a bit unusual in the cooler water temperatures, but encouraging hews, other than that it has been mostly small croakers on chunk bait. Whale activity is not was it was a month ago, but many of the mammals are still being spotted daily.
Good Fishing, Eric
