Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

Capt. Eric Brictson
August 18, 2003
San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -

August 18, 2003

Light crowds of anglers were greeted with the usual mid August tropical weather patterns, hot and humid was the best way to describe things, on Monday morning the 17 th, there was perhaps the seasons first measurable rainfall, it poured for a couple of hours and was definitely enough moisture to keep the dust down for a couple of days. At this time there is a possible storm system developing just to the south of Cabo and this should be watched closely, so far this season the Los Cabos area has not felt the effects of any major tropical storms, the next four weeks are historically the time that storms can hit this region. Water temperature has averaged 80 degrees and clarity has been clear and blue for the most part. Sportfishing fleets found improved action this past week, with daily catches including dorado, wahoo, dorado, yellowfin tuna, striped and blue marlin.

One of the most consistent spots was Santa Maria to Gray Rock, and close to shore, with the majority of the action happening within two miles of shore, there was lots of bolito activity in this area and this was attracting the larger species. Anglers have been trolling hoochies to catch bolito and then using this favorite baitfish to slow troll with. Lures have also accounted for a variety of fish, including increased numbers of blue marlin, most of them in the 150 to 300 pound range, also there were now more wahoo showing up in the daily reports, mainly striking on lures and weighing 30 to 40 pounds, most boats had at least one of the 'hoo in their combined catch, but other anglers that were more fortunate accounted for as many as three in one morning. Dorado were making a stronger showing as well, still not up to normal levels, but none the less they were being found in ones, twos and threes and most of them were weighing 20 to 30 pounds, anglers using bolito for bait reported several bulls up into the forty pound class. Yellowfin tuna were found in the same area close to shore, but they were football sized fish and were also making perfect baits for anglers wishing to try their luck at trolling for the larger marlin. There was talk of larger tuna further offshore, but that bite was not consistent and most of the charters were concentrating their efforts closer to shore where the action was more consistent.

Along the shoreline there were late season roosterfish providing action for anglers, trolling live bait was the best method, their preference was live mullet and roosters up to forty pounds were accounted for. Rounding out the inshore bite was a mix of pargo and jack crevalle. Beach anglers did not have much to talk about, except for several snook that were landed by experienced local anglers in front of the San Jose Estuary.

Good Fishing, Eric
