Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

Capt. Eric Brictson

San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -

October 19, 2003

Crowds of anglers are arriving in mass to this world famous Baja destination, this is now tournament time and the fever can be felt in the air. With the ideal weather conditions now prevailing and the record hurricane season over with, anticipations are high for a series of exciting events. Clear sunny skies are pleasing visitors with daytime highs of around 90 degrees, wind patterns are now starting to switch to the fall standard of blowing more out of the north and east, but so far the breeze has not been strong and offshore fishing conditions have been very favorable. Crystal blue waters averaging

80 to 84 degrees are being found as close to shore as four or five miles. Sardinas became more plentiful this past week off of La Playita beach, but with the near capacity crowds of anglers all wanting the preferred bait, it became a waiting game to obtain bait early in the mornings.

The panga fleets launching out of San Jose del Cabo found the most productive areas to be from the Gordo Banks to Vinorama. Cruisers also found better action closer to shore than heading 20 or more miles out. They reported a mixed bag of yellowfin tuna, skipjack, dorado, sailfish, pargo, grouper and triggerfish. Most consistent action was for yellowfin tuna and it was worth waiting for the bait, because it was the live sardinas that proved to be the most enticing bait, though other tuna were striking chunk bait, as well as artificial lures. There were two general hot spots where the fleets have been concentrating, the Outer Gordo Banks was producing larger fish, with the average yellowfin weighing 30 to 50 pounds, fish had to be worked for and daily catches would range from one to four tuna per boat. The tuna that are schooling in between San Luis and Vinorama are providing more action, anywhere from 5 to 12 per boat, but these fish are more of the football sized variety, 8 to 15 pounds.

There are a few dorado being found on these same fishing grounds, though most of the floating debris that is now being located is not attracting dorado like they were immediately following the summer storms. The dorado have been striking on lures and various baits and were averaging 10 to 20 pounds.

Earlier in the week there were several encouraging repots about wahoo going on the bite near the same San Luis Bank to Vinorama region, as many as four of the speedsters were caught by single boats and other reports one or two. The ‘hoo were weighing in the range of 20 to 40 pounds. They were hitting on the normal wahoo type lures, Marauders, lead heads and rapalas, with the action coming from the same area where all of the pressure is now on the tuna bite. There has been major boat crowds in this area for the past week, as a large percentage of the East Cape fleet is making the long forty-mile trip south to get into the tuna action. We expect that once the fleets spread out again and the water temperature cools a few degrees, that this will improve the wahoo action.

Good Fishing, Eric
