Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -

March 28, 2004

Crowds of spring breakers are now enjoying the warm sunshine and the various activities that Los Cabos has to offer. With high temperatures close to 80 degrees and lows near 60 degrees, the climate has been ideal. There were strong winds and high seas to deal with mid-week, but for the most part the persistent northern breeze was not a factor and anglers enjoyed great ocean conditions. The exception was on Thursday, anglers reported being beat up by ten foot plus swells off of the Pacific, but under clear skies, it was a different situation off of San Jose del Cabo where charter fleets encountered marine fog so thick that land could not be seen from 100 yards away, very unusual to have fog similar to California, it did not actual burn off until 1 p.m. It is definitely the time of year when the weather can change rapidly, now the water is again on a warming trend in the Sea of Cortez, though close to shore the water temperature is a cool 67 to 69 degrees, the region around the Gordo Banks warmed to 71 to 73 over the weekend and the overall fish reports improved and consisted of great variety.

The pangas out of San Jose del Cabo had daily catches that included sierra, jack crevalle, yellowtail, amberjack, pargo, cabrilla, dorado, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna and even a few wahoo found in the warmer offshore currents. The action for sierra had slacked off the past couple of weeks, but that certainly changed this week, as pangueros reported the best bite of the season for quality sized sierra ranging 3 to 10 pounds, the red hot bite was off of the Palmilla area and the fish were voraciously striking on sardinas, dead or alive, as well as hitting any colored yo-yo jig that was cast their way. Off the bottom rock piles anglers had very impressive catches of yellowtail, amberjack, pargo, grouper and cabrilla, with the majority of the fish hitting on yo-yo jigs, average size ranging 10 to 18 pounds.

With the offshore water temperature once again warming and within easy range of the pangas, this gave another option for anglers and over the weekend they produced good numbers of striped marlin on trolled lures, as fish up to 130 lb. were caught and released. Yellowfin tuna bite was not as consistent, but for anglers fortunate enough to encounter schools of porpoise that had tuna mixed with them, they accounted for yellowfin in the 20 to 40 pound class. There were also increased numbers of dorado moving back into local waters and after a long absence there were a scattering of wahoo being hooked into by boats trolling 5 to 10 miles from shore.

Good Fishing, Eric
