Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers -

May 23, 2004

Ideal springtime weather is attracting moderate numbers of visitors to the Los Cabos area, with plenty of sunshine and high temperatures in the 80s, a person could not ask for much more and if airfares were now more reasonable most certainly there would be more tourists in town. This past week there was more wind from the south, cooler Pacific water currents continued to push towards the Sea of Cortez, water temperatures ranged from a low of 67 degrees off of Cabo San Lucas to a high of 76 north of Vinorama and this fluctuation attributed to hit or miss offshore fishing conditions. Though the action for striped marlin remained very steady throughout the area, the only drawback was that there was no abundance of other species being found in the open water. On another note there was quality inshore and bottom action making up for the lack of variety offshore. Live bait supplies were adequate, consisting of mackerel, sardinas and mullet. Ocean swells were minimal, though they did increase a bit over the weekend, southern swells will be become more dominate in the coming months. Water clarity also varied greatly, there were reports of cloudy green water as well as clear blue waters being found, the area of Desteladera had reports of very clean water along with consistent billfishing.

Striped marlin were found feeding within a mile of shore off of Punta Gorda, quite a feeding frenzy was reported by the anglers that happened upon this scene. Schooling marlin were seen attacking meet balls of big sardines and would readily strike on live bait. Trolling lures further offshore also produced many strikes, actually at times out fishing live bait. The fish were averaging 100 to 130 pounds, but stripers to over 150 pounds were landed. Many boats reported multiple billfish days. While marlin dominated the offshore action anglers did find a scattering of dorado, yellowfin tuna and wahoo. Including one monster wahoo of 138 pounds reportedly landed by local San Jose post master Titi.

La Playita panga fleets were fishing areas to the north of Punta Gorda, near San Luis they found good numbers of dog tooth snapper (pargo), these fish did prove tricky to hook while trolling with mullet and after hooking them it proved even harder to keep from getting cut off on the shallow rocks. Most of the pargo landed weighed from 10 to 20 pounds, but there were many stories of larger brutes breaking lines. African pompano in the 5 to 15 pound class were found in same region, striking best on live sardinas fished on light tackle. Roosterfish were seen more than they were actually caught, it is still a bit early in the season, large concentrations of mullet are moving inshore and as water temperatures stabilize we look for the rooster action to turn on in the next few weeks. To round out the inshore action there were some powerful 20-pound jack crevalle providing good sport and some large late season sierra weighing 5 to 10 pounds.

Off the bottom rock piles anglers working yo-yo jigs and drifting with bait accounted for a mix of amberjack, yellowtail, pargo, cabrilla and grouper. Cooler waters have been to the liking of yellowtail and it has been unusual for these fish to actually out number amberjack. Typically there is a big run of larger amberjacks off of San Jose in the coming weeks, we are patiently waiting to see if these powerful jacks make their annual migration.

Good fishing, Eric
