San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers-
August 14, 2004
The Eastern Pacific continues to be unusually calm and free of tropical storm activity at least through mid-August, of course it is hard to predict what will happen during the next month, as conditions can deteriorate rapidly during the late summer. Winds have been relatively light, picking up in the afternoon and helping to make the 90-degree heat more bearable. Water temperatures have been reaching the boiling point as well, averaging from 85 to 88 degrees throughout the region. Swells have been at a minimal and this has made for easier launching for local panga fleets. Fishing action around the Gordo Banks has broken wide open, as schools of yellowfin tuna ranging to over 80 pounds have been dominating the action and big black and blue marlin are also showing in stronger numbers. Large schools of various species of skipjack, bolito and small tuna are moving onto the offshore fishing grounds and in turn are attracting more gamefish. If this mild weather pattern continues we could end up having incredible action for weeks to come.
Live sardinas were still scattered off the beach of La Playita, but were more abundant than the previous week.
Crowds of anglers were light, but for the few that were going out, a very high percentage were having great success. The most consistent action for the San Jose panga fleet was on the Gordo Banks, this is where tuna were hitting on chunk bait and live sardinas, pangas were accounting for anywhere from 4 to 12 tuna per morning, with many of the yellowfin weighing in the 30 to 80 pound class. Tuna seemed to be found throughout the area and there were reports of fish to over 100 pound landed. The Iman Bank and La Fortuna were attracting big schools as well, most of them a bit smaller, ranging 8 to 25 pounds, but the quantity were big time. Dorado were not as easy to find as were the tuna, more of them in open blue water than on the Banks competing with the tuna. The majority of the dorado found were medium sized, hitting on lures and bait, there was reports of several bull dorado to over 60 pounds accounted for.
Billfish activity improved this past week, including black, blue, striped marlin and sailfish. Numbers were not huge, but some boats were recording multiple marlin days. Marlin weighing 300 to 500 pounds were being hooking into everyday and there were stories of all day long battles with even larger marlin that ended up being lost. Trolling larger baits around the Gordo Banks has been a good bet for having a chance at hooking into the monster marlin.
Other catches included huachinango (pargo), dogtooth snapper and a few wahoo. Off the beach there was another flurry of action for snook off of the San Jose Estuary area, striking on mullet and sardinas, weighing from 20 to 40 pounds.
Good Fishing, Eric
