Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 20, 2005

Anglers –

It is now Spring Break time and crowds of college students and families are flooding into our popular Los Cabos area to take advantage of the great weather and all of the outdoor activities, not to mention the world-class nightlife. Despite the early mornings still being a bit chilly the days have been sunny with high temperatures reaching 80 degrees. As for anglers, they have not been as numerous, possibly due to weaker fish counts the past couple of weeks and the fact that this is never peak season for any of the more glamorous and sought after gamefish species. Sportfishing fleets are searching throughout the region for the best possible action, from the Pacific and into the Sa of Cortez, there has been no particular hot spot. The main factor for the decline in the action has been attributed to cooler and off colored dirty water conditions, average water temperatures were ranging from 66 to 69 degrees. Supplies of mackerel and sardinas were adequate, but the main problem was finding cooperative fish.

Yellowfin tuna were found offshore traveling with porpoise and were striking on trolled lures as well as live bait, sizes ranged 10 to 40 pounds, Jaime Bank to Golden Gate was producing fish as were areas off of Chileno and Punta Gorda, but most of the action was found 20 to 30 miles out and the action was no guarantee, hit or miss. There were some limited numbers of dorado being encountered, but no big schools, as would be expected in the unfavorable water conditions, just one or two here or there, found further offshore and also right in along the beaches, most of the dorado landed were in the 10 to 20 pound class.

With the lack of offshore action, many charters and particularly the panga fleets, have been working closer to shore for a mix of smaller fish, including sierra, jack crevalle, roosterfish, amberjack, yellowtail, pompano and pargo. The most numerous inshore fish have been the sierra, striking best early in the morning on live sardinas, with Palmilla Point being one of the more consistent spots in recent days, sizes were typical, ranging from 2 to 7 pounds. On some days anglers accounted for quality amberjack and a few yellowtail while using yo-yo jigs off the rock piles, fish weighed in the 15 to 30 pound range, but this bite was not consistent from day to day, as was pretty much the story for all species this week.

The striped marlin bite was slow as well, but in recent days the Cabo San Lucas fleet was finding some stripers outside of the 15 to 20 mile mark. There were also some squid in the 10 to 25 pound class caught in the same areas.

The combined La Playita Panga Fleets for the week sent out 58 charters and anglers accounted for 40 amberjack, 8 yellowtail, 24 pompano, 32 cabrilla, 92 pargo, 10 roosterfish, 220 sierra, 26 dorado and 6 yellowfin tuna.

Good Fishing, Eric
