San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 24, 2005
Anglers –
Spring break has come and gone and tax deadlines are overdue, accordingly there has now been moderate crowds visits the Los Cabos area, we do expect the month of May to attract more visitors and it typical does. Daytime temperatures are steadily increasing, with most days now reaching into the low 80s, though evenings still have a slight chill, making it for very comfortable all around weather conditions. North winds were particularly stronger through much of the week, it is the time when these relentless breezes usually reside, it is still considered transition time, weather has been a bit crazy, a little bit of everything recently. Water temperatures showed a warming trend as well, average temperature was from 71 to 74 degrees and clarity was exceptional from about 3 miles offshore on out, clean blue water, inshore has been a bit stirred up and murky do to unusual early season south swells. Supplies of live bait were sufficient, consisting of smaller sized mackerel and a mix of sardinas off of the San Jose Estuary area.
Catches included striped marlin, dorado, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, skipjack, pargo, sierra, jack crevalle, cabrilla, yellowtail, pompano and amberjack. Inshore action consisted mainly for a combination of pargo and sierra, with the most consistent place being from Palmilla to Cabo Real, same area produced some pompano, triggerfish, barracuda, jack crevalle, yellowtail snapper and smaller roosterfish. Sea lions were a nuisance on certain days, scattering schools of sierra and snapping off the majority of the hook ups at the same time.
The Gordo Banks started to show more sign of activity, several large dorado to over 30 pounds were landed and yellowfin tuna in large numbers were seen feeding on the surface, respectable size fish of 25 to 70 pounds, though only a few were even hooked into, apparently these tuna have been gorging on the plentiful red crabs and squid in the area and not to mention that we are into the full moon phase which is never known to be beneficial for the yellowfin bite. Pangas anglers were able to use red crabs for bait and load up on smaller sized pargo. A couple of whale sharks were also sighted on the bank, the next couple of months is when these largest of the world’s fish species make a strong appearance on these local Banks.
The highlight of the week for both the panga and cruisers fleets from Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo had to of been the wide open striped marlin action that was found right off of San Jose del Cabo from 3 to 5 miles out, the days of Thursday and Friday were especially red hot, feeding groups of the stripers were encountered and casting or trolling baits into these feeding fish resulted more often than not in instant hook ups, though many fish also were striking on trolled lures as well. Boats accounted for one to five marlin per trip in the 100 to 130 pound class, though by the weekend this bite slowed down, a combination of wind and full moon seemed to be contributing causes.
The La Playita pangas fleets sent out approximately 82 total charters for the week and anglers accounted for a total catch of: 180 sierra, 14 roosterfish, 28 jack crevalle, 28 pompano, 32 triggerfish, 280 pargo, 12 barracuda, 14 dorado, 2 mako sharks, 4 hammerhead sharks, 16 yellowfin tuna, 22 cabrilla and 58 stripped marlin.
Good Fishing, Eric
