San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Photo caption: John and Christy James were visiting from Ohio and went inshore panga fishing on Tuesday, January 31 with Gordo Banks panguero Jesus. They fished close to shore off of Costa Azul using sardinas for bait and accounted for a variety of species, including in this photo of a pair of golden jacks, and one yellowtail snapper, they released other golden jacks that were estimated to weigh close to 20 pounds.

Anglers –

The start of February brought with it cooler than usual weather, early morning lows ranged from 47 to 55 degrees, though skies were clear and the sun was warming days to about 75 degrees. Despite the cooler weather there were still quite a few tourists in town, most certainly traveling from areas much cooler than Los Cabos. Local water temperatures were also on a cooling trend, it appears that there is now a La Nina effect moving in and the water is a bit cooler than it normally would be for this time of year, it is now averaging from 65 to 69 throughout the region, with the warmest currents being around the area of San Jaime Bank. Supplies of sardinas and mackerel remained steady for anglers and the better all around fishing action was while using bait rather than lures.

For the panga fleets launching off of La Playita Beach the most common catches were for various pargo species bonito, sierra, pompano and other assorted jacks. Offshore action was not productive for the few charters that scouted out that option and there was no major warmer water break to be found within range, so the best chance for anglers to catch fish was while concentrating efforts closer to shore. Fleets fished in all directions since there was no particular spot that was better than others. Perhaps the best action of the week was found in the area of Costa Azul near Palmilla, anglers caught a smorgasbord of quality pompano, amberjack, sierra and pargo, for the handful of people that got into this bite they were impressed. A variety of inshore species that are not all that common locally were available and were striking on bait and various lures. The largest fish landed were Golden Jacks weighing up to 20 pounds, there were yellowtail seen mixed in with schooling amberjack, though the few that were not too spooky to strike in the shallow waters quickly cut off anglers leaders on the near by rocks. Most of the fish landed inshore were averaging in about the 3 to 10 pound class, but were great sport on light tackle and all of them provided excellent table fare.

The combined panga fleet from La Playita sent out approximately 54 charters for the week, catching a total of 90 pargo (huachinango), 78 yellowtail snapper, 16 dogtooth snapper, 15 amberjack, 4 yellowtail, 190 sierra, 28 cabrilla, 36 golden jacks (yellow palometa), 14 island jacks (locally called pompano), 22 croaker, 8 porgy, and 65 bonito.

Good fishing, Eric
