Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 26, 2006

Anglers –

The spring season has officially started and crowds of tourists are arriving in the Los Cabos area, they are being treated with plenty of sunshine, 80-degree temperatures and an all around great climate for taking advantage of all of the outdoor activities available. The north wind laid down by weekend and anglers were treated with excellent all around ocean conditions. Water temperatures were ranging from the mid 60s on the Pacific to 70 degrees from Chileno to Los Frailes. The majority of the sportfishing action has been taking place from the 95 spot to the Gordo Banks. Mackerel continued to be scarce, though on most days there were sufficient supplies of sardinas and mullet available.

Striped marlin was the most common offshore species being found, being located 4 to 12 miles offshore in the cleaner water, anywhere from straight out of Cabo San Lucas to off of Red Hill, the bite was not wide open, but better than it was the past week or so, stripers were blind striking on lures and being seen tailing on the surface, many stripers were hitting on rigged dead mullet trolled at normal lure speeds, many boats accounted for multiple billfish days, some catching as many as five fish per day, sizes ranged 90 to 150 pounds. A scattering of a few dorado were taken from the same offshore waters as were the marlin, but it was only one fish here and there, sizes to 30 pounds.

No yellowfin tuna action to report, except for a large purseiner commercial boat that unloaded a panga full of yellowfin tuna in the 20 to 80 pound class off the beach of La Playita. Apparently they’re some tuna out there somewhere, but the commercial boats are netting them before they are reaching the range of the sportfishing fleets. More porpoise are now being found throughout the area, but they are not holding schools of tuna as they normally would.

San Jose del Cabo panga fleets are fishing mainly closer to shore and off the various normal rock piles. Palmilla Point was probably the best area this past week for sierra, yellowtail, cabrilla and amberjack. Sierra action was pretty much non-stop, drifting with dead bait was the best technique, sizes ranging up to 6 pounds. A handful of yellowtail and amberjack weighing up to 25 pounds were landed by anglers that worked yo-yo jigs off the bottom, as usual many of these powerful yellowtail also cut off anglers lines on the near by rocks.

There were some varieties of pargo found off the bottom, including some quality sized huachinango up to 12 pounds. We look for more opportunities to find more of these prized fish now that the wind seems to have finally laid down.

The combined La Playita panga fleets sent out approximately 59 pangas for the week, with anglers accounted for an overall fish count of: 21 yellowtail, 19 amberjack, 94 pargo, 8 dorado, 68 bonito, 28 cabrilla, 14 parrotfish, 10 pompano, and 405 sierra.

Good fishing, Eric
