Fishing Report for San Jose del Cabo, Baja

San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 30, 2006

Anglers –

After stifling heat and humidity through the first part of the summer there was finally relief as Tropical Strom Emilia passed within 100 miles of the southern tip of Baja and brought with it much needed rainfall, there were varied reports from different locations receiving anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of rain. the storm bought some wind gusts up to thirty miles per hour, but not much damage was reported besides minor flooding. The first band of bad weather arrived mid-day on Sunday and lasted on and off through Tuesday. Sportfishing fleets were basically shut down until Wednesday and La Playita panga operations did not resume charters until Thursday. The San Jose del Cabo arroyo washed out the road to La Playita in a couple of places but with all the machinery now available with the marina project they were able to make repairs within about 12 hours. Heavy surf combined with high tides from the new moon pounded the beaches and once again tested the new Puerto Los Cabos jetty, all in all in held up okay, though storm waves were crashing over the top of the unfinished northern jetty and eight to ten foot surf was closing out through the jetty entrance. It makes you wonder what will happen when a powerful hurricane makes direct landfall in this area, it is only a matter of time and we will find out. It was nice to finally get some rain and the weather has been much more pleasant since the storm passed, though the humidity still is very high.

The fishing action had started to slow up right before the storm and since the baitfish have been scattered and the water stirred up and off colored, but as the weather continues to settle down the conditions are improving and we expect the fishing will do the same. The water temperature dropped down to an average of 78 to 82 degrees. All around the fishing action was not up to Cabo potential, the most common catch was yellowfin tuna, most of them in the 10 to 20 pound range, though a few tuna over one hundred pounds were accounted for. Anglers found the yellowfin by trolling with smaller hoochies or rapalas and once located they were chumming and hooking other tuna on live sardinas, similar to albacore style fishing. Before the storm the best method was to drift fish while chumming, in recent days it has proved more successful to chase the school with hoochies and then hook fish on the slide with bait. Some pods of dark brown porpoise were in the area and a few larger tuna were hooked among them. The best area for tuna the past few days has been near San Luis bank, but the Gordo Banks also showed potential as well, though the clarity of the water there still needed to improve.

Dorado were found throughout the area, but they were not numerous, striking lures and bait and ranged up to 40 pounds, anglers were lucky to land one or two of them. Also a mix of billfish, more striped marlin than anything else, though in the warmer water the stripers at times were not aggressive in strikes baits or lures.

Not much along the shoreline, as baitfish scattered with the storm. There were some pargo being caught off the same rock piles where the yellowfin were found, but not in any significant numbers and current was very strong to effectively work the bottom.

The combined La Playita panga fleet sent out 48 charters in the weather shortened week and anglers accounted for a fish count of: 1 wahoo, 3 striped marlin, 5 sailfish, 1 blue marlin, 110 yellowfin tuna, 34 dorado, 125 skipjack, 135 various pargo and 8 amberjack.

Good Fishing, Eric
