San Jose del Cabo - Saltwater Fishing Report

August 20, 2006
Anglers –
There seemed to be more tourists visiting the Los Cabos area this past week, despite the weather being uncomfortably humid and very tropical, though at this time there were no storm systems near enough to cause any alarm, only Hurricane Hector, but that was now heading west and over one thousand miles away from the Baja Peninsula. Ocean swells have been minimal and there has been only a moderate breeze picking up in the afternoon, overall very nice conditions for anglers. Water temperatures are averaging 85 degrees, with some areas closer to 90 degrees further inside the Sea of Cortez.
Supplies of sardinas have been plentiful off of the La Playita area and this is the bait that was proving to be the best bet for getting into the continued wide-open action for yellowfin tuna on the Iman Bank. Fleets from different areas and as far north as the East Cape have been congregating on this spot and the bite has not slowed down at all, in fact it might have even become better. Anglers are drift fishing with both live and dead sardinas and hooking into as many tuna as they like, the fish are averaging 30 pounds, but everyday there are specimens of 50, 60, 70 and over 80 being accounted for. Many larger fish are being lost because most anglers are using medium sized tackle suited for the average sized thirty-pound yellowfin. The fish have not been line shy and are striking on 60 to 80 pound leaders without hesitation. Actually the larger tuna have been hitting more often on dead bait, fished a bit deeper.
Though the tuna are definitely dominating the action, for about every ten tuna landed there has been a dorado or two mixed in, most of them in the 8 to 15 pound class, but some much larger, including one bull than was taken earlier in the week and weighed close to 60 pounds. A few pargo of various species are also being found in the same area, fishing with some weight towards the bottom, though there has been no consistent bottom action to really report.
Billfish action was best outside of Cabo San Lucas, where one black marlin of 500 pounds was reported, several blues over 300 pounds and many smaller striped marlin. Nothing around the Gordo Banks now, just a handful of sailfish around Iman Bank where all of the tuna activity was.
Off the beach there were a few tripletail up to 20 pounds accounted for by anglers fishing with chunk bait during the evening on the south side of the new Puerto Los Cabos. Most of the action came from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m.
The combined panga fleets off of La Playita sent out approximately 88 charters for the week with anglers accounting for a fish count of: 2 striped marlin, 9 sailfish, 76 dorado, 640 yellowfin tuna, 95 skipjack, 42 pargo (various species) and 8 amberjack.
Good Fishing, Eric
