April 22 report, Trout, Reds, Flounder

Capt. Matt Tusa
April 22, 2010
Bay St. Louis - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tuesday was Day 2 of the Monte Dobbs experience and it was pretty good. Some how got a deck hand on loan from Venice, LA. Good buddy Alex McIngvale was on his way home from tuna fishing and made a little pit stop to fish the skinny water. Too much fun catching up on all the old fishing grounds with Alex sounds like he is knocking the heck out of the fish with Capt Damon Mcknight. On with the fishing report....
Water was low with the north wind and dirty. Did find a few red fish on the flats but it was slow. Did get a few trout here and there looking for more redfish. Around 1pm we got our wind, water and tide just right. In one small bay we found perfect slot reds and big trout. At one point the boys got 6 reds in as many casts. Stayed in steady action for the last hour. Ended our two day adventure with 18 keeper reds and 27 big trout, did not even try to count the reds we released. Still throwing the Marsh Works Killa Squilla shrimp in the glow and shrimp patterns under the popping corks. Been tipping the baits with dead shrimp if the water is dirty for the reds. Big thanks to Alex for helping me with the fish and the boat. Good luck with the big water and stay safe buddy!
Fished Tuesday and Wednesday with Gus Lorber, Charlie Montgomery and brother in law Ray. We did leave late on Tuesday to catch some more water. Left the dock around 10 am to get some more water to fish in. The late move payed off in several areas. The water was rough and low in the morning. By the time we got out to the 3 mile area the wind was calming down from a nasty NE wind. By early afternoon we had pretty, green, calm water. Opted to red fish first, and found some fish. We missed alot more than we caught, but did find slots, bulls, black drum, even flounder. Got set up for mid afternoon fishing mud lumps and found plenty of trout. The only problem was they were either 10 inches, white trout or massive specks. We could not stay on a bite of 12-16 inch fish, no theories from me. Stopped fishing around 6 pm and headed back to the Shore Side Lodge with 21 keeper trout, 2 puppy drum, 1 slot red, and 2 flounder.
Got a few hours sleep and back up to fish for 6AM. Water was low, but pretty and found a little bait swimming around. Drifted banks of shells and mud lumps and actually found a better bite. Caught some massive trout but it was mostly 3 here 3 there all day long. Was able to do a little sight fishing mid morning and caught a few bulls in a foot of water. Came home early with a two day total of 48 trout, 2 slot reds(many bull releases), 2 puppy drum, 2 flounder.
Used the marsh works shrimp in clear, glow, new penny, and purple under the popping corks for all the fish. Still tipping with dead shrimp in dirty water for the reds.
