Bay St. Louis - Saltwater Fishing Report
I had the pleasure of fishing with MS Outdoors "Legend", Todd Shiyou. I have never had the chance to fish with Todd, just see him in passing at the boat ramp, or sharing his fish tales with the local morning coffee crowd at Kent & Sue's, so I was excited to fish with the "Legend" himself.
To start the taping of the show we decided to look for a few trout over one of my favorite grass beds, but it wasn't trout we found. After drifting about 100 yards of grass, and not catching but one nice speckled trout, I spotted something floating atop the water. A Tripletail! Not being rigged for catching one, I rigged up while Todd stayed with the fish and Scooter rolled the tape. In less than a minute we were rigged and on the attack. Maybe I should have let the host of the show catch it, but I could not resist. When it was all said and done the fish was hooked, caught, taped, and released. Scooter said he got that series from start to finish, and was some great footage. Its hard to believe we started the show out sight fishing for triple tail in mid April. One thing I have learned is that things on the water don't always go as planned, and you really have to take what "Mother Nature" gives you. Todd and I preceded to put together a great show, getting on a trout bite that would not quit, and capping it off with a couple of reds. I was impressed with the "Legend" Todd Shiyou's fishing skills, and am glad I was able to get out and have this fishing adventure.
Friday I had Bill and Pete for what was looking like the best day of the week. This crew came fishing with me last year and are apparently gluttons for punishments, because they were quick to remind me of how bad we did last year. We set out on what would be a day to remember! We instantly went to working on some fine speckled trout. Bill and Pete pulled fish after fish in until we had about twenty then it died. We made a short move on the same island and caught a few more, and every time it died we did the same thing. Making those small moves to fish a different pocket, point, key, or blade of grass we would pick up a few more. The bite was slow enough I kept wanting to leave, but the fish were good and kept us wanting more. We fished the same island all morning and capped off our limit leaving us plenty enough time to fish for reds and what ever else would come our way. We struggled to find the red fish, but did manage to catch three and one black drum. I was going to keep it under a closed lid, but Capt. Sonny opened it on the triple tail. I had stole four live shrimp from Capt. Kenny that morning thinking there might be a slight chance we would see just one. Turned out we saw a few and as luck would have it all but one of the shrimp died. Answer me this, "How do three out of four shrimp die in a 45 gallon live well?" We ended up getting two out of the bunch. Those fish wanted nothing to do with the dead shrimp. We did however trick the second one by pulling the dead shrimp away from the fish enough to make him want the bait. We ended our trip on that fish with 50 trout, 3 reds(2 released), a black drum, and 2 triple tail. Great trip guys I hope to see you again!
