Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Back Bay with the Four Amigo’s

I had the pleasure if chartering Clarence, Scott, Tommy, and Cliff today on Back Bay Biloxi. These guys were a blast to have on board. Apparently these co-workers have a great time at work because they sure appeared to enjoy fishing together.

The morning started out with a light 1-2 mile per hour breeze and a nice crisp 59 degrees. Fall was in the air and anticipation was high for a very productive day. After launching at the D’Iberville ramp we were on a short jog to the nearest reef to search for quarry. Live bait would not be on the menu until 9 am when Davis Live Bait Boat made it back to the dock, but that wasn’t going to stop us. We started off catching a few pin fish. Did I say few? I meant that was virtually all we could catch. They were every where. Along with some very large catfish we weren’t being very productive. Then, on one of those few days when the weatherman was right, it started to blow the 11-12 miles per hour that was forecast for the day.

Time to move! Quick call to the bait shop, no bait yet, back to the bottom. Searching for Black Drum and patrolling Reds. No luck on the primary quarry boated a few croakers and then BAM. Clarence’s pole nearly doubles over. The man was working this fish like he fished for a living. Once at the boat, it was obvious this was a nice flounder 18-20 inches. Before I could say let me land him for you in the net, Clarence lifted the fish toward the boat. Obviously this wasn’t that fish’s first rodeo so he took his opportunity and with one tail flip, threw the hook and was off to depths unknown. We all kidded Clarence all day about that fish but he definitely made up for it with two larger keeper flounders and one throw back.

Scott turned out to be the Catfish King for the day, Clarence the Flounder King, Tommy the Croaker King, and Cliff (aka: Stingray) caught about every fish in the bay, Sting Ray, Catfish, Pinfish, Croaker, White Trout, Gray Snapper, and Ground Mullet to name a few.

Not the best day on Back Bay but it was enjoyable. We never could locate the Specks and Reds but the final tally in the Ice Chest Hotel was 2 Flounder, 6 Croakers, 1 White Trout, and 1 Ground Mullet.

Oh yea! Scott came up with a new method of bottom fishing. One that doesn’t require you to hold the pole and it works great! To my knowledge that pole is still out there on the bottom at the Keesler Reef. And that story will be left untold by me so if you know the other four who were onboard ask them about the pole that got away.
