Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report
Great Day on Back Bay!
We had a beautiful productive day on Back Bay. The morning started a little foggy, as usual this time of year, but the fog burned off, the sun came out, and the wind was nothing more than a gentle breeze. A vast contrast from our usual dreary, damp, cold December mornings.
My friend Leonard, from Atlanta, was in town and fishing was the adventure for the day! We covered most of Back Bay and the Tchoutacabouffa River. Due to a minor, OK Major trolling motor malfunction, we were on anchor all day and were unable to sight fish for the Reds patrolling the banks.
Even with this set back we caught fish all day at every location. A couple of destinations had to be revisited since we left them biting the first time. Bottom line for the day, 1 Flounder, 6 Sheepshead, 8 Black Drum, 3 Ground mullet, 8 Croakers, 6 White Trout, 4 Speckle Trout, and 20 Sugar Trout,
Did I say “Sugar Trout”? I sure did! To those who are saying “What in the world is a Sugar Trout”? Here is the answer! It is a “Sciaenidae Drum”. Also known as a Silver Perch, Sand Perch, and Yes a Sugar Trout. The scientific name is “Bairdiella Chrysoura”. The fish is sometimes misidentified as a white trout due to its silver color and yellow/gold markings on the edges. Though small, they live up to their nick name of Sugar Trout. Excellent table fair especially when you have a large quantity to fry up for a small group of people.
Enough of the Marine Biology Lesson! Good Luck out there on the water! Take advantage of those unexpectedly warm fall and winter days and go wet a line. You might just have on of the best days you have had in a while, and don’t forget to take a kid fishing with you! Pass on your fishing knowledge and get a kid hooked on the excitement and challenge of Fishing!
