Huge Black Drum In The Shallows & Sheepshead Bending Rod Too

Capt. Robert L. Brodie
February 17, 2011
Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wow...it sure has been a while since TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS has posted, but I have been very active on the water, and my clients have been keeping those St. Croix rods pushed to the limit.

For the last week we've been catching the monster black drum in the shallows, and on 10-pound-test spinning tackle these 20 to 50-pound fish have been delivering world-class light tackle action in the gin clear shallows of the barrier islands.

Heck, many of these huge schools of fish are prowling in less than 2-feet of water, and my clients have been enjoying this winter fishing while casting to schools of fish in the hundreds, if not thousands at times.

To properly catch these skinny water prowlers it's best to have calm seas to sight fish these large bottom feeders, and as you can see from the few pics posted it has been exciting angling.

And by the way, the fishing for sheepshead has been excellent too, and these often finicky fish are being fooled into biting a properly presented shrimp, and into the ice chest.

On 10-pound test it's like catching a 4 to 8-pound red snapper on light spinning tackle. What can I say..they are top-notch fighters once hooked, and they eat well too.

A few weeks ago we had a lot of rain that messed up my speckled trout fishing in the coastal rivers, but they are probably feeding again also, but haven't tried them lately.

Bottom line, there are fish to be caught, and TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS is working hard to keep the big catches rolling in.

Looking forward to a big summer, March is booking up really fast, and hope it's a sign to another banner year of light tackle fishing in south Mississippi.

So book your trips well in advance by shooting and e-mail to [email protected] or calling at (228) 697-7707.

Remember, Capt. Brodie is a full-time year-round light tackle guide, ready to go at a drop of a hat. So what are you waiting for...let's fish!
