Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Well Leonard is back on board with us from Atlanta. This is part one of two, and part one is yesterday's trip and today's trip. The planned quest for the next few days is diversity and covering multiple areas of our coast.
Day 1: 7-16-08 Horn Island Pascagoula River
The plan was to start with fish haven 10 and pull some of the large 3-5 pound trout that have been living there off of the reef. Live croakers are needed, but bull minnows will do in a pinch. Well everything was good to go but the weather was a little unseasonable. A front had mover from the north down our way and put a micro winter wind pattern across our area. 5-10 miles per hour out of the north will cause the water to stack up just north of Horn Island creating some 2-3 foot chop with an occasional set of rollers to follow. Leonard had his heart set on FH 10 and I knew the Specks were out of the picture with the bottom being muddied up by the wave action. I asked Leonard if he was in the mood for sharks and he couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear. Once anchored we were casting in no time, and hooking up just as soon as you lifted the rod tip off the bottom. Polls bent and air born reefs sharks were the action for the next hour.
With the weather not letting down we decided to move inshore to the interior marsh of the Pascagoula River. We covered some territory and put the new 22" Bay Water and its trolling motor to the test. This is a sweet ride and can cover some very skinny water with ease and little fear of being left high and dry.
The catch was few and varied to say the least. There was little bait moving in the interior marsh making it tough targeting Reds. But the Flounder were willing players as well as one very, very small Jack Crevalle. I have never seen on this small caught on rod-n-reel. It was definitely camera worthy.
Day 2: 7-17-08 Katrina Reef
This was planned to be a short day, leaving time for other adventures to take place. With that in mind there was no destination like the Katrina Reef to satisfy the "Catching" that is sometimes missing in "Fishing". After acquiring 50 lively shrimp for the live well we were off. It was surprising how many boats were there for a Thursday. Most were in the Leeward Shore, we chose the Windward, and it was the right choice. "First Cast" a 16' speck nailed my popping cork and was escorted personally into the "Ice Chest Hotel". Nine more followed in short order but only three made the legal mark. Once the Specks left it was game on for White Trout. These were some nice fish and a blast to catch, as well as the innumerable Ground Mullet "Southern Kingfish". All in all a great morning 61 fish (4 Speckle Trout, 20 White Trout, and 37 Ground Mullet). Not bad for two fisherman and 4 hours.
More of Leonard's saga to continue!
