Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Biloxi, MS - Back Bay of Biloxi Delivers A Diverse Catch Of Black Drum, Sheepshead, And Freshwater Catfish Today!
Heavy rains has kept our local rivers and bay's salinity levels extremely low, an tainted with a brown-hue. However, by staying persistent and fishing the tides, a number of wonderful light tackle catches in the Back Bay of Biloxi have kept my clients smiling with arched rods, and plenty of fish in the box.
However, today was all catch and release, and my clients Michael and Jill Wheeler enjoyed the pull of big sheepshead, black drum, and two fine freshwater catfish. That should let one know just how much fresh water is dumping into our coastal bays.
The bite started at the old Back Bay of Biloxi fishing bridge where a number of big sheepshead, and a beautiful freshwater catfish suprized us. From there we moved to the old Ocean Springs fishing bridge where a few more sheepshead were landed.
However, a run of nice black drum in the 5 to 20-pound range turned on, this delightful couple enjoyed battling the hard fighters after casting into the deeper waters of the channel. A couple of monster fish were lost, but Jill managed to land that 20-pound fish.
Our 10-pound-test spinning gear received some punishment today, yet these anglers landed and released plenty of hard fighting bottom dwellers. After the drun run, a trek back to the origional site led to more sheepshead, and Jill landed another fine freshwater catfish.
Jill had suprised Michael today with this trip today, and until I arrived in front of the Biloxi Grand Casino with boat in tow, well, he had no clue of the adventure that was about to unfold. You see, Michael will be heading to Iraq in two weeks for a year of duty, and his wife thought this would be a great going away gift.
And she was right because we were blessed with a beautiful day on the water with plenty of fish biting. Now, Michael can be deployed with plenty of great fishing memories until his return home to his wife, friends, and family. We hope God watches over him, and brings him back home safe and sound while away from home.
Today, simple three-way bottom rigs and Carolina-rigs fooled the bottom feeders. Gear used today was 1/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Hooks rigged on 25-pound-test Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader material, and 1-ounce bank and bullet weights. Fresh dead shrimp from Fort Bayou Fishing Camp was the bait for the day.
Despite poor water conditions plenty of fish were caught today, and I am so glad it happened to a great couple. Until next report keep it safe out there, respect your fellow fishermen, and good fishing!
