Mississippi Sound & the Pascagoula River Marsh

Capt. Barry Brown
November 10, 2005
Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Limits of Specks and White Trout Galore

Over the past week we have consistently caught limits of speckled trout on artificial cocahoes. School trout (14to 16 inches) are all over the river from the mouth to several miles up river.

We are able to find fish by drifting the normal holes during the middle of the day, but they are easy to locate in the early morning and late evening by watching the gull activity. The specks chase shrimp to the surface and the gulls quickly close in on the shrimp. All you have to do is get in casting range and you can catch trout every cast until they move on.

The hurricane surge pushed an unusually large crop of white trout into the river this year. We are able to easily catch as many white trout as we want. Sunday we stopped at 100, but could have caught that many more. The biggest whites are about 14 inches, but even the smaller ones hit hard and are a lot of fun to catch.

The pogies are still plentiful in the area, as are finger mullet and shrimp. We are using all three for live bait on some trips, but live bait is not necessary to limit out.

There are several spots where we are catching 3 to 5 pound specks on top water in the early morning and late evening. A few nice reds are also mixed in with the bigger trout.

As long as the warm temperatures hold out we expect to stick with this pattern. Even when the cold weather comes we expect to continue to catch good numbers, just a little deeper.
